But just yesterday I thought I'd post these thoughts. Here I am, getting around to it, in the cool of the morning. My friend Tom Mank advised trying this tuning E A D G B E He called it "A minor." Any Joni tunes in this one? As an alternate to DADGAD he also suggested D A C G A D which I guess makes it a dominant 7 chord Recently, as I practiced my "Joni set" for the Ithaca Festival, I became addicted to Hejira. The lyrics, the emotion, the chords, the tuning... what a ride. I could play it over and over again. Thanks to Howard for the transcription. C G D F G C Here's a link to a photo Sue took of me doing the Joni thing :) http://pattiwitten.com/photogallery.html#joni I wrote a song in May that uses D A D F# A E which adds a 9th to the D major open tuning. I like how the F#m9 chord sounds in this tuning. 446000 cheers, Patti - -- Patti Witten, singer-songwriter http://pattiwitten.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jul 2002 08:35:12 -0400 From: Susan McNamara Subject: Re: musings >Sorry I can't help with the Hissing issue. That's ok, Patti, I'm on a mission with this one! :-) > >My friend Tom Mank advised trying this tuning >E A D G B E >He called it "A minor." Any Joni tunes in this one? Isn't this thinly disguised as "concert" tuning? Maybe there's a string off here. I know sarah mclachlin uses E A D G A D a lot. I also worked out a slightly passable version of "in your eyes" in this tuning (capo on 7) inspired by Nancy Wilson's version. I'll have to post that some day on the dusty wanderer site. >As an alternate to DADGAD he also suggested >D A C G A D >which I guess makes it a dominant 7 chord A strange boy tuning!! You would do this song great justice, Patti!! Try Howard's tab. I guess I'll have to mention that this is also the tuning for my least favorite Joni song "rays dads cadillac" (no flames please!) > >Recently, as I practiced my "Joni set" for the Ithaca Festival, I became >addicted to Hejira. Patti's Joni imitation was completely dead on and the guitar work was just a joy to behold (check out her beautiful blond guitar in the picture!). As an anxious spectator, I was also very gratified to see how many people in the audience were bowled over by the power of the songs. Excellent, excellent, excellent. You lucky people who will get to hear patti play at Jonifest!! Her most dead-on versions were some of the hardest joni songs to play: Cold Blue Steel, For the Roses, BARANGRILL!!, and she also did a very soulful version of both sides now that had the crowd silent. At the Ithaca Festival that is no small feat. Yeah!!! Great Job, Patti!! (and she looked just like Joni, even with appropriate living room furniture on stage!) take care, sue >I wrote a song in May that uses >D A D F# A E >which adds a 9th to the D major open tuning.
