Over time most of my Joni covers prove to be not so true to the originals. For instance, I do not even attempt the bridge section of car on a hill, the part that is horn-heavy and leaves the original tempo. For refuge of the roads, I skip "the hard parts" as I do in Amelia. I pick the hooks I want, the ones I can play, and leave the rest behind. I try to keep original meter, and I try to keep to the vocal moves, but those morph also. Interpretation is a sincere form of flattery and homage. I become aware of my alterations when I listen to the records (rarely these days) or hear someone else play the songs. Sue and I fooled around with the VG8 and I noticed she plays all the songs in quite a different way from me. It's all good. I fool around with Joni's songs all the time...then I try other tunes (so sadly this happened with my Led Zep bout) where the songs did not translate well. This may be just a style problem but I think it could also be lack of substance in the core song. I played around drastically with Impossible Dreamer (which is a piano song). I'm going to try that on the VG-8 this week and see what happens. It's so cool!!! ;-) take care, sue >Interpretation is a sincere form of flattery and homage.
