MuchMusic did an interview with Joel, who talked about Joni's tunings and demonstrated one of them on her guitar. I taped the interview and sent a copy to Wally Breese, but my copy has mysteriously disappeared. I heard recently (I forget where) that Joel's book of Joni's tunings will be coming out next year. Does anyone remember where this was announced? Not to be too negative or anything, but some of the tunings published over the years are not accurate (the song Night Ride Home for example). In it, Joel updated the attendees of his complete two volume set of transcriptions and lyrics to all of Joni's released works. (Hopefully next year, he said) Jim has to edit out the write-up, so stay tuned to JM.com , as it will soon be up there. There is even a picture of Joel. Just ssshhh...don't tell anyone I told ya. It's a good read. ~rose ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2001 13:06:28 -0800 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: RE: wanderer-digest V1 #42 jim, i learned the night ride tuning off the jmdl website (sue's tab)...i assume you are referring to those published in books, rather than this one which sounds great & is easy to play... >>>Not to be too negative or anything, but some of the tunings published over the years are not accurate (the song Night Ride Home for example). It was a revelation to me at the time and opened up a lot of the mystery surrounding Joni's tunings. I could actually SEE her left-hand chord shapes. This of course is the famous "Canadian" tuning, which she first used on God Must Be a Boogie Man (and hinted at in Michael from Mountains) and became a favourite of hers in the 1990s. Jim Soon To Be Playing: A Charlie Brown's Christmas by Vince Guaraldi ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Dec 2001 21:02:54 -0500 From: James Leahy Subject: Amelia I've been playing Amelia for several years now, but I still have trouble maintaining my left-hand stamina as it goes through all those myriad chord changes, many of them full barre chords. I still haven't been able to make it through the whole song -- my left hand always cramps up. Does anyone else have this problem on this song? Despite her claims to having a weak left hand, I think Joni has the constitution of an ox! It's never been difficult for me to play on an acoustic or electric.
