It can be a little confusing, because many names appear on the book, including editors etc (this is why Carol Cuellar is often mentioned in the credits). But Joel has been the primary consultant for tunings and chord shapes for many Joni songbooks (as well as some Neil Young stuff I believe). As well as For the Roses, there is Turbulent Indigo, Night Ride Home, Taming The Tiger - not forgetting the "Hits" and "Misses" books. Joel worked on all of these. As far as I understand it, he advises on tunings and chords, but does not do the detailed transcription work. There are others who do this, but Joel has the final say as far as chord shapes go. As far as the TTT book goes, I didn't do any of the "main" transcriptions (chord boxes and melody line stuff). I wrote some tablature examples and performance notes in the section at the end, so I did write out small parts of a couple of songs, but just as examples of certain strumming styles etc. Howard Susan McNamara wrote: > > Correct me if I'm wrong, tabmates, but the only tunings that Joel > Bernstein ever published were in the For the Roses songbook. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Dec 2001 15:46:37 EST From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: Time for full time In a message dated 12/6/01 3:32:53 PM Eastern Standard Time, howard@souzoukakia.netscapeonline.co.uk writes: > As far as the TTT book goes, I didn't do any of the "main" > transcriptions (chord boxes and melody line stuff). I sure wish I had one of you guys as an instructor. rose in nj NP: The Arrangement ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Dec 2001 17:25:23 -0500 From: Susan McNamara Subject: Re: Time for full time > Joel >worked on all of these. Kudos on all the hard work you do on producing fabulous tabs and teaching materials. I know I have learned a lot reading your work. I still am so jazzed that I can play The Rain Song. I know i've said that too many times, but it freaks me out!! :-) Anyway, your email got me to thinking, is Joel a musician, a photographer, an archivist, Joni's guy Friday? it was never clear to me what his main expertise was. I wish I could remember the conversations Wally and I had about his dealings with Joel but the brain cells are shot (especially now since I've been working for 10 hours straight.) take care, sue - -- "Heart and humor and humility will lighten up your heavy load ... I've been reading Karen O'Brien's book. Has anyone else begun reading it yet? In there she states that at the age of 16, Bernstein was invited by Joni to photograph her at the Carnegie Hall show. Their freindship would endure from there. 30 years later one of those fotos was chosen by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as the official still for her induction. Pretty cool, eh? I think a movir or a book should be written just about him. Kinda like an "Almost Famous" film. Very interesting person, this Joel Berstein. I'm charmed. ~rose at her post limit ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 18:00:12 -0600 From: Mark Domyancich Subject: Re: Time for full time Les was in brief contact a while ago when we (Sue, Marian, Howard and I) had asked for his input on the guitar tabs, especially on transcriptions that we never agreed completely on (Overture/Cotton Avenue). Les also told him about our work on the guitar site. His response was brief - what it came down to was that he had already done several, if not every, guitar transcription and wasn't interested in trying out ours nor adding his input on them. He also mentioned a time constraint (I think he was working on a tab book for Neil?). Anyways, as I recall I was pretty pissed off by his attitude, but for the life of me I don't remember why! Just goes to proove there's no point in being angry. :) As for the book that has been mentioned, it's hard to say how to go forward if indeed Joel is working on a tab book and what it's progress is. I wouldn't feel comfortable with working on a book that may or not be better than the one Joel is working on. Ideally, I would love to take part in Joel's book directly instead of being moderated by a third party. But as I mentioned I felt he expressed no interest in working with us to create definitive tabs. I think that's what pissed me off - I got the notion that he was not willing to even try out our tabs. I'd love to see what he has done but there's no way for us to contact him. So besides that, I was going thru some old Zip disks I had around here and came across a partial tab for the lead guitar part for A Strange Boy - should I finish it? I feel a need to tab something. Have a good night, everyone - Mark P.S. if you guys haven't heard Joel play, he backed up Joni at the No Nukes Rally in '79. Nothing intricate, but he did have a sweet Martin though. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Dec 2001 22:28:52 -0600 From: Mark Domyancich Subject: Joel As someone mentioned, Joel is also a photographer and last I heard that was his main interest and profession a few years ago. So the whole guitar tab book my be put on hold for the time being. He did the inside photo for Neil's "Harvest" of Neil reflected in a door knob, and if you look closely you can see Joel with his camera too. Neat picture.
