Hi Sue, Bill and other cdgdbd lovers, I have a song we are recording now, in this tuning, and I have been playing Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire a lot. What a faboo tune. I got it from one of the old songbooks (I bought them as soon as her albums came out) that has the chord diagrams. Those are the best books. " - Joni Mitchell ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Nov 2001 09:21:34 -0500 From: James Leahy Subject: Recent songs I've been working on Sue--since you asked ... I seem to gravitate back to G tuning a lot. I love a lot of Judy Collins' arrangements for traditional folk songs that use this tuning (Golden Apples of the Sun, etc.). While in G (or is it F?) I like to go down to Otis and Marlena, a tuning I posted on jm.com a couple of years ago (so simple after I figured it out; but it truly stumped me for years!). At first I had a lot of trouble singing and playing with any degree of fluency (in fact, singing and playing guitar at the same time is a recent thing for me and I'm really enjoying it). But now it seems to come together. O&M is a great, vicious song. The lyrics are so pungent and sharp and concrete that it's a thrill to sing them. The line "Muslims stick up Washington" sounds almost prophetic nowadays. Behind this, a pulsing, quite delicate, folklike guitar figure propels you along. And what a thrill to ascend to the line "they dream of golden beauty." In G tuning I also like to sing The Gallery, with original male pronouns intact. In other tunings, A Strange Boy, a perfect song for a homosexual male to sing, is my favourite Joni song to sing and play. I think I've developed some fluency at it. Song for Sharon is difficult for me to sing with personal conviction because it seems so specific to Joni's own life and to a woman's perspective (although I was blown away by PM Dawn's cover of this song at the Central Park concert a few years ago). It could be quite campy for a male singer to sing the line "mama's nylons underneath my cowboy jeans."!!! However, I still love playing the guitar part in this truly bizarre tuning. This song is GREAT, and I haven't played it in a while. I love how the lower strings sound while playing the intros. GREAT. and of course the lyrics are amazing: my favorite And the neon mercury vapor stained Miami sky it's red as meat She's painting again!! :-) As I was thinking about the songs we've been talking about I did a generic tuning search at the site. I don't use this function enough. the generic tuning for CBS is x77534 which also brings up: Don't Interrupt The Sorrow CGDGBD (C77543) Otis And Marlena BbFCFAC (Bb77543) Sweet Bird CGDGBD (C77543) Trouble Child CGDGBD (C77543) Underneath The Streetlight CGDGBD (C77543) Cool!!! Even tho I do change the gender around when I sing it. I think the same thing can be done with Starnge Boy. So many of the images and feelings in all of her songs seem to strike a chord way down deep and I am not a homosexual. In SFS I sing "mamas nylons underneath her cowgirl jeans". When I was growing up I had a ton of female friends. Living in Honduras there was a small community of people from the US and for some wonderful reason, there were alot of girls. I always got on better with girls as friends anyway and that continues thru today. I believe that has alot to do with me being able to identify with the "Archie and Silver Screen" images, besides of course being truly in touch with my feminine side (she is definitely a lesbian). LOL! Sing on without fear! Michael > In other tunings, A Strange Boy, a perfect song for a homosexual male to > sing, is my favourite Joni song to sing and play. Joni has frequently commented on how she likes her songs to be seen as genderless and raceless. However, she has contradicted herself on this. In the press conference for her appearance at the Edmonton Folk Festival in 1994, she was asked how she liked the Canadian tribute CD, Back to the Garden. She said she felt that the lead singer (male) for Spirit of the West should have changed the gender when he sang Coyote. I remember feeling disappointed when she said this. I really loved it that the singer (who I believe is straight) kept the gender male. Recall how a lot of female folkies in the sixties sang traditional folksongs with the female love objects unchanged ("My love she takes me by the hand. 'If ever I marry, you'll be the man.'")? I think male singers (straight or gay) should be able to do this as well. In fact, the more mixed up and confused the genders are, the more intrigued I am!
