I knew this would happen! I start a dang mailing list then I don't have time to post!! The story of my life... so when Patti was talking last week about the A tuning she came up with for one of her new songs I thought, hmmm, I wish I could invent a new tuning! So when I want to learn a tuning lesson I always go back to the master... This was a very compelling interview for me "My Secret Place" which is the August 1996 interview Joni gave for Acoustic Guitar magazine. That issue is encased in plastic in my room somewhere (underneath a pile of junk). So here's what Joni said about creating the Magdalene Laundries tuning: "Sometimes I'll tune to some piece of music and find [an open tuning] that way, sometimes I just find one going from one to another, and sometimes I'll tune to the environment. Like 'The Magdalene Laundries' [from Turbulent Indigo; the tuning is B F# B E A E]: I tuned to the day in a certain place, taking the pitch of birdsongs and the general frequency sitting on a rock in that landscape." After I read this I ran to my guitar, tuned it to this ML tuning and just played the progression like a circle back and forth thinking about the waves. It was so relaxing I think I just sat there and rocked for about an hour, not even singing. You could actually hear the waves. I did anyway. Try it instead of your daily zen meditation and see what happens! :-) sue PS Here's the tab from the website: http://www.jmdl.com/guitar/themagdalenelaundries-hw-t.cfm Howard's version http://www.jmdl.com/guitar/themagdalenelaundries-sm-c.cfm Sue's version ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Oct 2001 16:00:18 -0400 From: Susan McNamara Subject: question Did everyone receive a "Welcome to the List" email when they subscribed? This is a lot of fun to do! Go outside on a nice day, in a nice location like your backyard. Listen to the sounds you hear around you. One time I tuned the 2nd string to match the pitch of a lawnmower! It was between Bb and B. Crickets, birds, driftwood, all make their own sounds and it's a lot of fun to just listen to the sound they make, turn one of the tuning knobs to match the sound, and there you go! I got a really neat tuning a few years ago, I think it was CGDFCD, all from just sitting and listening to the sounds around you.
