Can you send names to the list of your favorite alternate > tuning master (besides Joni of course). PJ Harvey Bruce Cockburn Neil Young David Crosby Steven Stills You could lump those last three together, but it might be better to keep them separate as they've done their own solo stuff as well as some joint efforts. As far as I know, Neil Young has only ever used two alternate tunings: "Dropped D" (bottom E down to D) and "Double dropped D" (both Es down to D), but he has done a lot of songs using these. I'll see if I can dig up any useful links relating to the tunings used by these guys. It includes a section at the end listing "current players who play primarily in non-standard tunings with details of the tunings they use." see his list below. His entry for Joni says > Joni Mitchell--Numerous tunings, mostly undocumented Well, it was 1992 - what did he know?! :) But his 'Brief History Of The Modern Use Of Alternate Tunings' highlights the importance of Joni and David Crosby. See: http://www.win.net/~mainstring/tunings.html His (1992) list of players and their tunings includes: > Dan Ar Bras--DADGAD, others > Pierre Bensusan--DADGAD, DGDGCD > Martin Carthy--DADGAD, EADEAE > David Crosby--DADGBE, EBDGAD, DADDAD, DADDGC, DGDDAD, AADGBE, CGDDAE, DADGBD, AAEGBD, STANDARD > Alex DeGrassi--EBEF#BE, EBEGAD, EBEG#BD#, > EBEF#BD, DADGCF > > Dave Evans--CGDGAD > > Peter Finger--EBEGAD, DAEGAD, DADGAD > > Davey Graham--DADGAD, EADEAE > > Michael Hedges--DADGAD, DADEAB, BbFCEbFBb, > BbFCEbEbBb, DADGCC, CC'DGAD, > DACGCE, STANDARD > > El McMeen--CGDGAD, Standard > > Brad Jones--DADGBE, EBF#BEbAb (using 2 capos), > DGDGBD, STANDARD > > Stanley Jordan--EADGCF (all 4th intervals) > > Pat Kilbride--DADGAD, DADGBE > > Pat Kirtley--EADEAE, DADGAD, DADEAD, DADDAD, > DGDGBD, DADGBD, STANDARD > > Leo Kottke--DGDGBD, DADGBE, STANDARD > > Adrian Legg--Several, with numerous tuning changes while > playing via Scruggs banjo tuners > > John McCormick--DADGAD, EADEAE, DGDGbBD > > Joni Mitchell--Numerous tunings, mostly undocumented > > Preston Reed--DADECD, CGDGBE, CGDGAD, DADGCD, > AEDGBE, DGDGCD, DADGBE, STANDARD > > John Renbourn--DADGAD, DADEAD, DGDGbBD, DGDGBD, > CGCGCF, CBbCFBbF, EAEF#AD, DADGBD, > STANDARD > >Martin Simpson--DADGBE, GDGCEA(!), CGCGCD, CFCGCD, > DGDGCD Hope this proves helpful. I'll try and contact Pat Kirtley to tell him about the jmdl guitar archive and hopefully encourage him to come on the list.
