When she was just a little baby being baptized, the priest said that she was going to be a singer one day. OK, so maybe it doesnt go back that far. The musical journey outlined in her debut probably began about 10 years ago when Thirsk was the lead singer of then up-and-comers Rose Chronicles. After receiving tons of play on the radio and taking home the first Juno given for best alternative album, Thirsk's band were poised to become the next household name in Canadian music. "I think we should have been and could have been the next big thing," says Thirsk. "When we won the Juno, we should have went back out on the road or had another single released, Im not sure why the record company decided not to do that." Actually she probably does have a good idea why the record company didnt commit to the band. Shortly after the Juno win, there was turmoil in the Chronicle camp. "There were problems in the band," admits Thirsk. "That kind of made the record label lose a little faith. Its hard to sink everything into a project when youre not even sure if the band could be together" The eventual breakup of the band was difficult for Thirsk, who says they were like family to her. After the Rose Chronicles broke up, Thirsk worked with other artists, including a successful stint doing guest vocals for Delerium. Still, through it all Thirsk has been writing songs on her own. Little by little, alternating between writing with a band and taking time on the side to write her own songs, her solo material became a lot fresher. It would take a decade for Thirsk to gather the songs that she wanted to put in a solo album. "Thats why I called this album Souvenir," says Thirsk. "Basically, Ive been writing songs since the beginning of my music career for this album, and I sort of picked certain ones from each time in my life and its kind of like a souvenir of a different time in the last 10 years." In the past, the bands that she played with provided her with a musical track that she said was like a canvas and all she needed to do was paint over it. Although she was thrilled with the idea of doing a solo album and being able to make the final decisions, the added responsibility made her a bit apprehensive. "I was kind of insecure about it," Thirsk said. "I second-guessed myself a lot, but the more decisions I made that ended up good, the more confidence I built." Now, with a solo album that shes proud of and more confidence then shes ever had, Thirsk is ready to go out on tour and prove that she is better now than she was with the Rose Chronicles. She definitely has one advantage over them and any other band for that matter. "One thing I dont have to worry about is, Im not going to break up with myself." And TV now the video has been made! It's certainly possible for us to do this. Many bands use e-mail campaigns, where the fans e-mail radio stations with requests for their music and it's very often successful. So let's take a few minutes just to mail a few radio stations, and see if we can actually give something back. :) Does anyone know any stations? I've got the e-mail address for requests for CFOX in Vancouver. I thought that might be a good place to start? requests@cfox.com Obviously, not living in Canada makes it a little hard for me to know the radio stations there. Anyone got any ideas for stations to target? and also I checked out the MuchMusic web site (www.muchmusic.com) and there's a show called MuchOnDemand, is that the show to e-mail? If so it's ondemand@muchmusic.com Let's see if we can get Kristy some airplay. :):) I'm sure it'll work, it's worked for so many other bands. Well, I'll get the ball rolling and e-mail them now. :) Justine 'I was a statue in velvet skin you stole' - Rose Chronicles www.kristythirsk.com ------------------------------ End of vicious-thorn-digest V8 #19 **********************************
