I feel a bit silly now. The source of my disappointment with Souvenir is obviously due to my total ignorance of her solo work! Outside of Delerium and Balligomingo (and one cut from Rose Chronicles that's on a Heveanly Voices CD), I've never heard any of her other efforts. I'm not one to do the Napster, Kazaa (sp?), Limewire, bootleg thing. If music isn't on a CD - or on mp3.com (which I haven't even used in over a year) - - - I don't hear it. Guess I have too many other priorities that pull me away from time-consuming downloads on dial-up. I fell in love with her in 1997 when I listened to Karma, then Semantic Spaces - and more recently, Balligomingo. Unfortunately, I never took the time to get either of the Rose Chronicles CDs, so I don't have a clue as to her style there. I guess you could say I'm not as rabid a fan as the rest of you! ;) Before Souvenir I was completely unexposed to Kristy's solo efforts. So....yes....that would explain the bit of shock I experienced. Don't get me wrong though....I DO like many alternative/mainstream female vocalists - Sarah McLachlan, Tara MacLean, Heather Nova, Tori Amos to name my favorites in that genre. My heart and soul though resides strongly in the esoteric ethereal realm - heavenly voices mixed with electronica, darkwave, dream-pop, celtic, medieval, neoclassical, shoegazer, etc. That's the world in which I fell in love with this dream angel's vox. This CD is actually a pretty decent example of somewhat pop-ish alternative music! It's just that I wasn't expecting it - being totally in the dark the way I've been. The feeling is akin to my first listen to Delerium's "Poem." Loved its vocals, but the music wasn't as mysteriuos and esoteric as its predecessor Karma. A very different sound than what I had expected. (Although, considering how far Karma was from Delerium's "Reflections I" work - from their very first CDs - I shouldn't have been surprised at ANY redirection from Leeb/Fulber!) Poem was a disappointment at first, but now I actually love the CD! I think Kyle stated a few things that I also sensed but not quite enough to verbalize.... The whole formulaic thing: verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-chorus does detract from a serius appreciation of the music. His example of a gripping verse, then mundane chorus was on the mark. Her voice IS incredible! There is NO denying it! I'm sure I will continue to listen to the CD and come to love many of its tracks. Some of your comments about Rose Chronicles has me very interested in getting copies of those CDs. Thanks for sharing! Take care all! Jim __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Hi Kristy (The Azoic Kristy - not Thirsk! ) Do you still hang out on the Twilight ML list? I left that group a long time ago. It had reached a point where music was no longer discussed - only upcoming shows in cities where I don't live! ;) Hope your music career is doing well! Thanks for the lead on Shelley Harland. I'll look her up. Jim - --- Kristy - Nilaihah Records wrote: > Jim, > I sort of feel the same, but I do have all her > earlier Rose Chronicles Stuff > and like that more than this new CD. I can't wait to get my hands on the CD, just hoping that Maplemusic (or the mail service) keeps its promise of 7-12 days on airmail even to the arctic latitudes. I haven't been waiting this excited for a new CD since '97 when I somehow managed to order the already-then-not-so-new (and totally unheard of and completely unavailable in Finland) Happily ever after.. And yes, it's nice to see how people who listen to Kristy are cool and also keep their cool and manage to discuss her stuff like this. Of course I'm sure that all of you are just plain WRONG and it's the best album ever.. Ok, I'll try to remember that trying to be smart or funny in a foreign language and culture doesn't necessarily work, so I'll just cut the crap and participate next time after listening the album. But my hopes are so high up - not the least for at last getting to hear Kristy in the format which I lately have become most fond of: singer-guitar. My favorites for a while have been Liz Phair's "girlysound" and Nick Drake's "Pink Moon", both which I heartily recommend. By the way, "pop-ish" sounds really good, especially right now, as it is already as dark and cold as in a grave here. Not speaking from experience, though. bye, Jon ____________________________________________________________ Get 25MB of email storage with Lycos Mail Plus!
