It surprises me that some people don't like the album even after hearing previous solo work. I understand that it would be a shock if you went straight from Rose Chronicles to Souvenir without hearing any of her other solo work, but I think that other work has been pathing the way for Souvenir. Because of the previous solo work that's been floating around on the net I feel like with this album she's actually remained true to herself. That she's actually doing 'her' music. A lot of my friends don't like Rose Chronicles, but they love Kristy's solo work. So I can see that it could happen the other way around as well. i totally agree with John, I fell into the album with the opening 'ooooooh's. :) Everything I love about her voice is there. And I do like the lyrics. (I'm so pleased the lyrics are in the booklet, I'm a master at singing the wrong words! ) But I did listen to her solo work a LOT. So I haven't just jumped to this cd from Rose Chronicles or Delerium. Like Lauren, Kristy's the one who got me interested in the ethereal female vocal. And I absolutely love her voice. I think I'd be shocked if she started to sing metal, maybe that album wouldn't be top of my list. ;) But I think because she has such a great and interesting voice that she can sing almost anything she wants to. So I've had the cd in my player nonstop since getting it. It's only been removed for two plays of a different cd (I'm going to a gig on Thursday and haven't listened to their cd for a while so needed the refresher). My favourite is still Home for Angels. But if we were all the same, with all the same tastes then the world would be an incredibly boring place and we'd never be able to get tickets for any gigs. :) Jus ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 2003 08:54:13 -0700 From: "Mindy G" Subject: Re: "Souvenir" disappointments. Well I'm glad you guys brought your thoughts up! It's great to see that we can be a fan group, without feeling like we have to wear blinders. I've actually wanted to say a couple of the things that were brought up myself, but just haven't had emailing time due to personal stuff. Now I totally love the cd, it's been in my car, playing virtually non-stop for almost two months now. And it's grown and grown on me, with the exception of Home for Angels, because I just don't like that one, (and I love the fact that that is Jus's favorite because it shows how we can all love KT yet take different things away :) But I too had thought to mention about the lack of diversity in the song structures and how much the choruses just repeat and repeat at the ends. But my greatest disappointment is that Truth Fantasy is missing. :) I would almost say Giant Pedestal too, but I'm too afraid of how they might have changed that, as they did Imagination. :/ ~Mindy~ _________________________________________________________________ Concerned that messages may bounce because your Hotmail account has exceeded its 2MB storage limit? I hope no one took my last message as saying everyone has to like the CD; just, as Justine said, Kristy's solo material really has logically led us up to this album. It also wouldn't make sense to expect Kristy's solo material to be an extension of her work with Delerium and Balligomingo, since all she contributed to those pieces were the lyrics and vocal melodies. Her lyrics on Souvenir have a different mood from the Delerium and Balligomingo lyrics, and the Rose Chronicles lyrics were completely different from all of these also. Kristy writes to the genre she's working with. Her Souvenir lyrics are very poppy, and appropriate for pop music. However, I think for all the different kinds of music she's done, the melodies have always been catchy and fun to sing along too, Souvenir included. Also as Justine said, I don't see how you could love the songs on Bootlegs and not like the songs on Souvenir. Aside from those also being pop songs, I actually think "Something Spilt" is one of Kristy's worst songs, and I'm glad that wasn't included on the CD. I also don't particularly like "Giant Pedestal," though maybe it could've been better with a better recording than is on Bootlegs and some more variety to the sound of the song. I love what was done with "Imagination" and "Second Fiddle," though. "Behind the Wheel" would've been an interesting inclusion, but maybe she didn't want to worry about licensing rights with that one, or she just wanted an album with all original material. "Home for Angels" is one of my least favorites from Souvenir, but the ending with all the layered vocals is beautiful and is the only part of the CD that really reminds me of Kristy's work with other groups. I also don't mind the choruses.. the only song where the chorus repeat at the end bugs me is "In the Dream." I find most of the choruses very nice. Anyway, even I was a little shocked and disappointed the first time I heard this album at how poppy it was. I was hoping for some more daring musical and singing styles since I know she's done so much work with them. But it helps to keep in mind that she's been trying to get this album done for a very long time. She most likely wanted to include the older songs and didn't want to include anything that would sound really out of place. Souvenir is a solid, coherent album. I hope she releases more "interesting" solo work in the future, but I am happy with this as her debut. Wow! This is the most e-mails I've received from the list in ages! ;) Everyone's been so quiet lately. Although I'm now feeling like an outsider (echoes of my life! ) cause it seems I'm the only one who loves Home for Angels, and I also love Something Spilt from Bootlegs too. :) I hope that the CD gets a lot of airplay and generates a lot of interest. I hope that as a result she gets a lot of funding and we don't have to wait so long for her second cd. I'm not sure what kind of music gets played on US & Canadian radio, here in the UK it's pretty much crap. Well, depends upon your taste of course. I rarely listen to the radio because they never play anything I like. I remember being at work and hearing Sarah McLaughlin played on the radio and it was a shock! (Though I think she was only played because a boyband covered one of her songs) Felt more like normal at the end though when they mispronounced her name. :) Our radio seems to be being taken over by Pop Idol, Popstars, Fame Academy competition winners. All the bands are manufactured. There's nothing 'real'. Maybe the name Eric Rosse attached to the CD will help in terms of interesting the people that can make things happen for her. What do you think? Will it get airplay in Canada and the US? And I have to say, I think everyone on this list is FAB! It's great to be on a list where no-one is afraid to say what they feel. :) Jus ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Oct 2003 18:10:52 -0500 From: "Kyle Fehribach" Subject: Re: "Souvenir" disappointments. First off, I just wanted to say that I, too, am happy to hearing so much from the mailing list. Although I kept up with the on-line digest for quite awhile, I officially joined a few days after I bought the CD just waiting for this type of topic to be broached. This is simply wonderful. Anyway, back to the topic. Although I wasn't expecting anything RC-esque from her debut, considering that was a completely collaborative work whereas this is all her, it still surprised me at the almost complete pop/adult contemporary nature of the album. There was very little musical diversity on the album (aside from the instrumentation of "White Light," but again, the chorus kills the song for me), and the songs just didn't sizzle like they have on all of her prior solo work. To clarify here too, the thing about the choruses isn't so much the repeating of it so much as the actual choruses themselves. Although her lyrics are more accessible on the album, the verses give a little more depth than the choruses do. For example, I'll take the aforementioned song. The verses are rather dramatic and beautiful with lines like: Satan won't leave the light on waiting for me to feel locked to my own fear and that's when he comes with a heart like a dungeon, i know what i feel is pungent hell in his nails and that's just one touch once i had been infected, all kinds of love were rejected Then we get to the chorus: isn't life funny love, pain, and money the darkest clouds, honey they can always fake they're sunny It's just too forthright and blah to me, especially next to the verses and the kick ass music. And on top of that, to have the chorus repeated over and over and over again just kills it for me. I can't even stand the choruses to one of my favourite music/vocal/verse songs, "Take You On." It just seems to me like the choruses were tacked on to these songs, like they kinda fit the theme but not the song itself. *shrug* And I definitely wasn't expecting anything in the vein of Delerium or Balligomingo from her. Collaborating on that stuff is wicked, but for her to come out with that on her own would freak me out! One last quick note: I was kinda confused by the fact that all of her other songs were re-recorded for this album, and yet they took the original demo of "Souvenir" and added on some additional guitar work and strings (which I LOVE, don't get me wrong; hell, I wish she'd added more cello/strings to the album!) and threw it on there with the rest. I can kind of see why, considering her vocal work on the original was absolutely gorgeous, but I've been wondering what their reasoning was for that... Anyway, keep the discussion going! .kyle. ------------------------------ End of vicious-thorn-digest V7 #83 **********************************
