I ordered the CD and received it a few days ago. Ummmm....what happened? I've been in the dark on her development and progress towards her solo CD, but the sound and feel of this CD is NOTHING like her past stuff. I went back and gave a listen to her cuts on Delerium's Semantic Spaces, Karma, and Chimera, as well as her cut on Balligomingo. These past efforts were oozing with a very sensual feel, many possessing a dark, mysterious feel. Each tune grabbed me and gave me goosebumps. They slipped under my skin and stimulated my senses. What a pleasure! This CD is like listening to a Paula Cole, Sarah McLachlan or any other number of "alternative" female vocalists. In some instances it sounds very close to a country-cross-over album (owing greatly to the use of acoustic and, at times, semi-twangy electric guitar). Is this her true style, and the style of past efforts were evoked more by her collaborators (with the exception of lyrics)? I don't understand. Has she indicated that she was going in a different direction musically? Are future efforts likely to be the same? Sorry for appearing perhaps negative. It's just a bit of a disappointment. Jim, Kristy's solo material, which it seems you've never heard anything of, has always sounded like the material on her solo album. Some of those songs have been around for years. I've come to the conclusion that while Kristy is able to sing music in basically any style she puts herself to, she is at heart a pop singer. She has attained her level of popularity due to her collaborative efforts, but we haven't really heard what Kristy herself has to say until now. I'm sorry you apparently don't like female AAA/adult alternative music and think it all sounds the same. I, for one, can't stand Paula Cole, but whatever. I am generally much more into female singer-songwriter music than electronica, but Kristy's the one who got me interested in the ethereal female vocal electronica music because I was intrigued by her voice as soon as I heard it. She still has the voice no matter what genre she sings in and I love hearing what she tries next. To hear her sing in another completely different style, pick up Rose Chronicles' two albums, Shiver and Happily Ever After. Neither are anything like her electronica work, and you may prefer them to Souvenir because they don't sound mainstream. She doesn't sound very erotic on them, so if that's all you want, stick to the electronica. I hate to say it, but I have to agree here. When I first popped this CD in when I first got it several weeks ago, I'd have to say I was slightly disappointed as well. My introduction to Kristy was through RC's Happily Ever After, and the foundation of my love from her stemmed from these songs. The sorrow, rage, and confusion in her voice, not to mention the somewhat esoteric and dark imagery of her lyrics, captivated me and has kept that album in my top five faves of all-time since then, usually bouncing back and forth between one and two, depending on my mood. Thus I started getting into all of her older stuff. Aside from a few tracks (namely "Dwelling" and "Awaiting Eternity"), I wasn't too impressed with Shiver, though I loved almost everything on the Dead and Gone to Heaven EP. From there I've kept up with all of her collaborative efforts, all of which I've loved, which is something on its own considering I have a total lack of disinterest in the electronic genre. Yet her utterly gorgeous voice and lyrics drew me in and kept me captivated. Then came BootLegs and her other solo material, again, all of which I loved. From her first simple acoustic solo works ("Bounds of Love" and "Songbird") to her pounding rock-influenced tracks ("Truth Fantasy" and "Giant Pedestal") to her utterly beautiful ballad epics ("Souvenir" and "Something Spilt") to her more electronic-influenced songs (the demo of "Run Away" and "Over It"), I was in love. I could not wait to get my hands on her full-length release. Then came "Returning" from Delerium's Chimera. Although both the music and her delivery were right on, the lyrics through me. I had not expected any political-social commentary from Kristy, and while I hate songs that are forthright in their commentary, I accepted that Kristy as a writer should feel free to expand her horizons. So while I may not be a big fan of the lyrics, I grew to like the song as a whole. Then came Souvenir. And disappointed was not the word. Almost every single track on here is radio-ready: formulaic verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-chorus lyrics that are a far cry (to me) from almost everything else she's ever done. And while I listen to almost any given musical genre -- pop, rock, rap, adult contemporary, country, classical, gothic, ethereal -- I just wasn't expecting her to travel musically in this direction. The title track itself doesn't much seem to fit on it's own album! I want to be clear, though, and state that I don't hate the album. Once I started listening to it more and tried to hear the album as her official artistic debut (i.e. pretending none of her other work exists), I began to slowly fall in love with the album. The lyrics, particularly the choruses, are what keep me from enjoying the album completely. I feel certain songs are ruined completely because of the choruses! I love Kristy. She's still my favourite female vocalist, and I expect great things from her in the future. But if she continues on this path, as much as I hate to say it, not a single one of her albums will ever become absolute faves of mine. .kyle. P.S. I wanted to congratulate Jim on being brave enough to state his opinion. It's sometimes scary to come forth with feelings like this, especially with a fan base as passionate as Kristy's. But I've been a devoted fan for seven years now, and I have your back on this one. - ----- Original Message ----- Thanks for the lead! I ordered the CD and received it a few days ago.
