I also like Sarah Slean a lot but haven't gotten her newest yet. I have heard good things about it though and would recommend older stuff as well. That's just a short little list for now. :) - -Joanna ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jan 2003 00:07:45 -0800 (PST) From: "net dud" Subject: Re: Hey Hey - Here's what I'm listening to: Jorane - Vent Fou (http://www.jorane.com) Kind of like a Quebecois Tori Amos who plays cello. Mimi Goese -Soak (http://www.luakabop.com/mimi/) A great great album. Mimi used to be in Hugo Largo, who were kind of weird. A good kind. Apparently, she also did some stuff with Moby, but I don't hold that against her. I had dinner with the guy who used to play bass in Hugo Largo once, but I didn't know that at the time. He was a really cool guy. Veda Hille - You Do Not Live in This World Alone (http://www.vedahille.com) I love everything that Veda Hille does, and even if I didn't, my wife would buy it anyway. Great songs, great words, great band. Jerry Douglas, Edgar Mayer, Russ Barenberg - Skip, Hop, and Wobble (http://www.sugarhillrecords.com/catalog/pagemaker.cgi?3817) (http://www.jerrydouglas.com) Probably not of interest to most people on this list. All acoustic, mostly bluegrass with a lot of other stuff thrown in, featuring the greatest Dobro player on the planet. I've gotta listen to things like this once in a while, or all the electronic stuff starts to sound like pink noise. I should also mention Mani Khaira (http://www.manikhaira.com), a nice young feller, also from Vancouver. A couple folks from KT's band also played here and there on Mani's album "Arrived", as did that wonderfully noisy Sean Ashby from Sarah McL's band. - Bill ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jan 2003 11:11:58 -0500 From: "Steven McElwee" Subject: Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil - Where to start? Hi, For someone like myself who has just recently discovered Dead Can Dance but has not yet acquired any CDs of the Cocteau Twins or This Mortal Coil, where does one start? There are a lot of CDs for both. While one cannot help but be curious about the development of artists such as these over time, one has to be realistic about the up-front costs of the CDs and the amount of available listening time. thanks in advance, Steven McElwee ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jan 2003 11:23:09 -0500 From: "Nogueira, John" Subject: RE: Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil - Where to start? I prefer latter-day Cocteau Twins as I find the music more lush and ambient and less crunchy. My faves in order of preference are "Heaven or Las Vegas" then "Four-Calendar Cafi". And the best is that you can listen to sample tracks before you go out and spend money on a CD that somebody else thinks is awesome, but you just might not. hope that helps, Kelley Yahoo! While I'm not huge on Cocteau Twins, I do have some of their albums and find Heaven or Las Vegas and Milk & Kisses particularly enjoyable and accessible for me. I love the melodies, and the production is lush. I don't have anything by This Mortal Coil, and I don't like Lisa Gerrard's voice, so I'm not into Dead Can Dance. If you want more, "Milk And Kisses" is also quite good, but IMHO, not nearly at the level of the first two.
