Source: www.babynamer.com [snip] "Kristy": This girl's name is used in English. It is a nickname of Kristen. "Kristen": This girl's and boy's name is used in German and English. Commentary: The influence of religion on names is evident throughout the world. For example, it is a tenet of Islam that the best names either refer to attributes of Allah or are derived from hamida, an Arabic word meaning ''praise.'' Names used on the Indian subcontinent often refer to the deities of Hinduism. Though Christiana's direct refererence to Christianity is exceptional, names with ties to the West's predominant religion are far from unusual. Many Hebrew-derived names reflect Christianity's Jewish heritage. Greek- and Latin-derived names witness the church's early development in the Mediterranean basin. Finally, many Germanic and Gaelic names honor saints who spread Christianity throughout northern Europe. This shows in the e-mail lists that I'm subscribed to. What other mailing lists are you on? I'm only on one other -- the Heather Nova list at ONElist (just under 100 members in only a few months). Great list! Per capita, this list is quite multicultural for its size. I used to be a regular on the Fumbler list -- the Sarah McLachlan Fumbling Towards Ecstasy list run from Australia (about 800 members last I remembered). I left (twice) because IMO this list's better days were before Sarah really broke in the States i.e. much fewer members. I also thought the quality of discussion was better a few years ago when only college students and upwards had e-mail accounts. Very low signal-to-noise ratio now. Still love Sarah but she really hasn't done anything for me since Fumbling in '93 -- has it really been that long? There's millions of other Sarah lists now but I haven't felt the urge to try any of them. I could probably be talked into a Tara Maclean list quite easily though. Actually, she toured until late 1997, but there hasn't been much going on aside from some soundtrack appearances, and her appearance in the Playstation game "Apocalypse" * Enigma : Talk about roller-coasters. No messages for a few days, then 100-200 in a few days! There are over 1000 people from every continent (except Antarctica). Since Enigma only releases albums every 3 years or so, we discuss about Enigma-like bands (Delerium is one of them). * Treefort (Barenaked Ladies) : I joined after the release of "Stunt", and I guess that's when 75% of the list joined as well. Some people get inside information, but it's mainly just talk about the bands, their songs, and other do-dads. The list can get very frustrating--between 40-100 posts a day. * In The Wings (Tara Maclean) : A fun list. Lots of different and fun discussions about almost anything and everything. It's sort of like the Ecto list, but more concentrated on solo female singers. *nudges John to join the list* I used to subscribe to the Ecto list, but I keep forgetting to resubscribe. Whew! Lawrence :) P.S. - Oh yeah, did I mention that I subscribe to this great list dedicated to Kristy Thirsk and Rose Chornicles? No? Well nevermind then. :D ------------------------------ End of vicious-thorn-digest V3 #25 **********************************
