Worth a listen next time you're in the CD store or next time you request a tune from your local college radio station (unless of course you work at one like our Erika does). Tara Slone -- wow! She means business. Here's what CMJ New Music Review wrote about them: [] There's nothing about Joydrop that's particularly groundbreaking, but the band is nonetheless proof that, in the right hands, any tried-and-true formula can take on a new level of intensity. Musically, Metasexual is reminiscent of a number of commercially well-known alternative rock bands (not the least of which is Garbage) that mix guitar pop melodies with distinctive female vocals, but Joydrop achieves its own particular artistic success, and does it with two secret weapons: First, it has a knack for spicing up its work with a variety of sounds, including everything from drum samples and loops to heady string arrangements, in an inventive, sharp-witted way. Harder to miss is the titanium pipes of singer Tara Slone. She's a former opera student, and you'll be well aware of her bionic vocal skills by the chorus of Metasexual's first cut. Joydrop is a gem of a find for fans of the genre that are looking for something new. Oh yes, education always means no end of artistic wonders. >Joydrop is a gem of a find for fans of the genre that are looking for something new. My intent is not to trash any of the bands mentioned. I'm just amused of the adverts and the verbal fireworks that seems to be the only creative outlet (if any) that the music industry (press included) has. Poor bastards. Have a listen to Garbage, Republica, and (maybe, I have'nt heard them) the above... Have anyone ever heard of CURVE, for example? I don't hail them as the inventors of the indie/technology/and onwards style, and I think the bandmembers would merely gasp at the suggestion. ;) I'm however irritated, for what it's worth, that new bands carrying on and developing a very rich, promising and sparkling mix ('manchester', '4ad' - guitars, synths, samplers, loops, new order, curve, cure, state of grace, and so on, not to mention RC!, you know what I mean) are spoken of as 'new' or even unique. Would it hurt their journalistic trendy honor so bad if they mentioned from where and how this 'tradition' came? It may be a crazy, inconsequent thought, but just a few words from them could get a 'fan' even more interested of the style. And in the end buy more records... Though perhaps not all of them released on Sony, Virgin or Warner. But it's mostly 'Flavor of the week' isn't it? And btw, I like Garbage. She's so cute when she smiles. A shame she does'nt smile very often. Then again I like the attiude, but can't help feeling that plastic seems quite artificial at times. ;) cheers, /Wanderer ------------------------------ End of vicious-thorn-digest V3 #20 **********************************
