Now I bought "It'll end in tears" just the other day and I was playing it as
Wiseworks until someone told me that one of the tunes sounded too much like a
funeral durge (I think it was 'Dreams made flesh' with vocal by Lisa
Gerrard)and asked to hear something prettier. The Liz Fraser rendition of
Song of the Siren is indeed very beautiful, in response to Tine's experience
with this song on the TV, I'd say that as far as it hits my ears Liz's voice
is a bit lower than Anne-Marie's usual voice, and a little more nasel and
honey like, (whereas Ann-Marie when she's singing sweetly sounds like ice
melting in cold running water warmed by the clear sunshine) it left me pining
to hear Tim Buckley's rendition, of course Star Sailor isn't sold anymore, so
I made the jump and downloaded it from Napster (I'm sorry everyone, I had no
other choice). Now I'm singing the song to myself in a sort of Tim Buckley
manner. Liz has only one other song on the "It'll end in tears" album called
"Another day". I think that David Lynch picked the best one for Lost Highway,
it has the most colour in it.
The cover of the version of that album that I picked up in England I think
reflects the mood of the album very much, as if it were a body of water
filled with thick dark smoke, maybe it's like trying to listen to something
and bonfire smoke from next doors bon fire comes through the windows and all
you can smell is that smoke, that's the feeling I get all the time, although
indeed it's a very beautiful album apart from track 11, and there's the
problem that with the male voices on some of the other tracks, they all feel
like complete strangers to me, maybe everyone in it apart from Liz Frazer
sounds feels completely unknown. Perhaps the smoke will clear or it's just
part of the package.
But I'm keeping this one and will listen to it many times.

I don't have much of a problem with track 11, it does something
interesting with the flow of the album toward the end there.
It is rather different from the other tracks, but I like the
fairly mellow twist it provides. It does set me solidly in the
mood of 80s punk, however.
I know what you mean about the male voices, and they take you
somewhere unexpected.
If we're going to talk about It'll End In Tears in terms of an
association to VB, I'll say that the title track to The Landing
gets somewhere near the IEIT feel when it starts to unwind partway
through that very long 10 minute or so song. I also think of
IEIT often when I'm listening to "Redefined."
Maybe VB likes to end their albums in a way that makes me think
of that old This Mortal Coil album.
