Hi
Just me - back from another work trip to Paris - more good music to
recommend from there ('cos there seem to be
several bands who sound kinda like Velvet Belly but not quite):
* Francoiz Breut - she's got a much deeper voice than Anne-Marie, but
otherwise, shock horror, her band sound
pretty similar to VB (I swear the guitarist even has the same red
guitar as Henning) - I think
she's signed to Virgin France
* Autour de Lucie - just 'discovered' them last night at a gig at the Elysee
Montmatre (Paris), and they were amazing!
They sounded like a cross between Massive Attack and Garbage
(verging almost on live drum'n'bass on a couple of
tracks), with an 8 piece mini orchestra and some great lighting (the
French really know how to put on a show)
Just wish I'd been able to go to a record shop to buy one of their
albums before I came back to London, sigh.
So that's my recommended listening of the week.
I just can't wait for tonight now, because Morten Abel's in town, and he's
set himself a challenge.
Not only is he going to play 3 live dates to highly critical London
audiences (who aren't going to give
a shit if he's a big rock star back in Norway), but he's also going to be
playing without a band for the
first time. Yes, that's right, Morten singing and playing the guitar on his
own. This I have to see, because
anything could happen!

Well, I just went out and bought Spirit of Eden since it's one of the two
favourite albums of Velvet Belly's mentioned last year in a magazine along
with Jeff Buckley's Grace. I didn't think that Mark Hollis was who I
thought
he was after seeing some of the earlier album covers, thank god the group
changed their hairstyles. I liked that song "Life is what you make it" when
it was released, I don't know which album its on though. He has another one
of those ethereal haunting voices, maybe as if he's been stuck out in some
timeless place watching countless seasons rolling by, there's a mythic
resonance....I'm having a small high...
