A-ha - good to see there's still life in Velvet Station - Dominic and I were just saying the other week that we should get some discussion going again on here. I've seen 'Love and Sex' 3 times, all pre-screenings though, and only the last time I saw it (with Marie Frank, who's also on the soundtrack) was the finished version with 'Easy' playing as the credits roll at the end. I think the film's only out so far in the U.S., UK and France though....or is it out in Norway and other countries yet??? Velvet Belly have been compared to The Sundays before (VB are better) - probably because The Sundays have an ethereal-voiced female vocalist. Tin Tin Out did a cover of one of their songs a couple of years ago: 'Here's Where the Story Ends' Personally I think that Talk Talk have had more of an influence on VB's music - I just 'discovered' their music for the first time after hearing 'Inheritance' on this month's Q magazine CD (which also features VB favourite Nick Drake) - I went and bought Talk Talk's 'Garden of Eden' album as a result and was not disappointed - it's gorgeous music - heck, even DJs have been rating it as their favourite chill-out album lately! Not much VB news at the moment - all I know is that inbetween their day jobs they've been demoing some new material... and that more and more people are slowly discovering the 'Lucia' album for the first time - 3 years on and it's still a classic. As for me, since the Quart Festival in VB's hometown of Kristiansand, I've just been work, work, working with a little travelling inbetween with (only because of work though)...but there's some great music either just out or about to be unleashed on the world - look out for Danish singer Marie Frank, the new album from the Waterboys (sounds more like Spiritualized than the celtic folk rock of yesteryear), Shea Seger (effortlessly cool without even trying), Way Out West (at last, some decent dance music, especially with guest vocals from Opus 3 singer Kirsty Hawkshaw), Dido (she who sings so beautifully on the Eminem single) and not least Tom McRae, who I think a lot of Velvet Belly fans might like (check it out for yourselves: http://www.tommcrae.com - I recommend 'Draw Down the Stars') .....otherwise I'm waiting for the new releases from U2 and Norwegian duo Kings of Convenience, who are starting to make a name for themselves over here in the UK....There hasn't been this much good music around for a long time :) - fLip - - -----Original Message----- From: Wmvrrvrrmm@aol.com [mailto:Wmvrrvrrmm@aol.com] Sent: 12 October 2000 22:02 To: velvet-station@smoe.org Subject: Re: [VS] Back on the list! Someone there ought to break it down into a couple of sections. It's great to see some signs of life at Velvet Station after all these months, I thought that maybe everyone had been frozen solid for a while Did anyone go to see the film 'Love and Sex' to listen to Velvet Belly's 'Easy' track get played at the end? Uncut Magazine in their review of the soundtrack album calls VB, Oslo's answer to "The Sundays". I'm sorry but I don't have the foggiest clue who 'The Sundays' are or were The Velvet Belly Page An unofficial fansite dedicated to the Norwegian band Velvet Belly The Wmmvrrvrrmm Place ! First they were more in to synthpop, and after 1985ish they sound a bit more like VB, the male singer got a great voice. I've discovered that many girls like Talk Talk! Tonight i'm going to a club and watching the German synpopduo Invisible Limits, anyone heard of them? /Stefan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 14:14:33 +0200 (CEST) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: [VS] Just some info ... Hi, For those not "blessed" with norwegian entertainment news - Briskeby will join A-ha touring Europe. Back then in '94 I did go to the Crash Test Dummies concert just to see Sarah McLachlan open for them, so I know how it is to be desperate to see someone live :) Anyway ... the Briskeby people are talented enough to maybe some day soon do what A-ha did, so it is rather fun for them to tour together. I noticed the other day that the cello-player now playing for the likes of REM, 10k Maniacs and Indigo Girls used to be in a band called Tiny Lights who among others 10k Maniacs opened for back in the early 80s ... really strange that music business :) - -- Yngve Ecto Guide to Good Music - the best source for great music http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ End of velvet-station-digest V3 #41 ***********************************
