Veda was one of my important discoveries for last year, one of those artists who, once you hear them, instantly become part of your psyche. That sounds a bit melodramatic (and a little bit creepy, too) but let me put it this way: While writing a play towards the end of last year, as I wrote certain scenes all I could hear was Veda's music. I kept thinking "That tune would be SO right in here". It perfectly captured the mood I was trying to put across. Anyway -- the new one. Although more in the mode of "Here is a Picture", "Field Study" is not so much a step back or even a step to one side, it's more of an extended ramble, combination chamber piece and lesson in natural history, in rehearsal. It's a digression, it's a doodle, an album of rough notes and pencil sketches, marginalia in an old textbook. It's easier for me to admire than it is for me to like, and certain songs sound like certain other songs (Oddly, the main piano line in "observations:plants" reminds me strongly of Gershin's "Concerto in F". Just thought I'd be reeeeeaaaalllly pseudy, there) But I suspect it will grow on me, and in these days of pre-fab tunes, teens and terminal sell-outs, Veda remains very much her own person, and very much a thing of wonder. Can't wait for the UK tour! Adam K. That sounds a bit melodramatic (and a little >bit creepy, too) perhaps, but i know exactly what you are talking about. it was the same way for me. hearing veda's music for the first time was like welcoming an old friend back after many years of separation: my memories of this old friend were vague and shrouded, but i instantly recalled the comfortablness that we had. many times i hear one of veda's new songs, i have this, "oh yeah, i remember that..." >Anyway -- the new one. still processing. i've been gone quite a bit lately and had to settle for quickly encoded mp3s played through laptop "speakers". a proper headphone listen is sorely needed. the damp grey weather we're currently having in new england should be perfect for doing that. woj ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V5 #31 *******************************
