Since I've received a few s in my direction regarding the fact that I didn't rush right home and write up the Mercury Lounge gig (gods, do I have to do *everything* around here? ), here we go! Nutshell: it was another good show. It complemented the Acoustic Cafe show quite well, in that there was very little overlap between the sets, and since the Mercury Lounge is a rock club and not a folk venue, Veda was able to rock out a bit more. Strangely enough, there were fewer people there than in Bridgeport. A lot of the local listmembers were nowhere in evidence -- I hope everything's okay with you all. Here's the set list: Songbirds/Song For Snake Born Lucky Kurt Weill/Hans Eisler song New song about poisonous plants Old Song 15 Years Killzone! Williamsburg Bridge (with Oh Susanna) Bellyfish (with Oh Susanna) All Fur Peculiar Value (encore) Clumbsy "All Fur" and "Clumbsy" were requests. Before "All Fur" she noted that "someone on the Internet... said that this song scared them. I thought that was strange since it's just about really good sex. So don't be afraid!" :) She had to play "Clumbsy" on the electric, since during "Williamsburg Bridge" the pickup on Blanche crapped out, and we ended up getting the Fuzzbox version. It took her a really long time to tune the electric to play the song, but it was an interesting version once she did. The new song was neat. It was done on piano, and afterward Veda said that most of the words were taken from something she wrote when she was 7 (she commented that since she's been pillaging the work of others for a while now, it's time to pillage herself :). woj noted that one of the plants referenced in the song, jimson weed is otherwise known as datura, which the Tori Amos fans among us will be familiar with. It starts by listing a litany of plants, followed by "some early berries are eaten by mistake". Later there is the line, "some people are poisoned more easily than others", and at the end it all resolves with "I could eat you by mistake/Like I could eat Turkish Delight/I want your delight" (or something like that, this is all from fuzzy memory). It was worth getting home after 2 am and being an utter zombie at work the next morning. No word on when Veda will next be in this area, but be sure I'll post the news here when I get it! +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V4 #9 ******************************
