Veda did a good show at the Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport last night. The turnout was pretty good -- there were quite a few people there who had never heard her music before, and she won quite a few people over. Oh Susanna played first, and Veda accompanied her on a couple of songs from _Johnstown_, playing piano and singing backup. I have to confess that I'm still not a big fan of Susie's live performance, and I noticed the crowd getting rather restive as her set went on. I heard some comments during the intermission that she needs to add at least one up-tempo song to her repertoire to liven things up a bit, and I'd have to agree. It all starts to sound the same after a very short while. Veda went over really great, though. Since I was working the door I got distracted a few times so I couldn't keep accurate track of the set list, but here's what I remember her playing: The Boy In The Woods Slumber Queen 3xthin Greenery Working/Noah's Ark One Hot Summer The songbird song (which does have a title now, but I can't remember what she said it was) Wrong Clumbsy Ponybride Two songs by Bertolt Brecht and Hans Eisler Born Lucky 26 Years encore: Williamsburg Bridge (w/Oh Susanna) Precious Heart She only played a couple songs on her acoustic guitar -- all the other guitar songs were on the electric, which sounded great. Her new kick is the songs of Brecht and Eisler (*not* Weill), and the two that she did were wonderful interpretations. (I'm not sure what they were called.) A couple interesting news tidbits: - -- Veda's getting married! She and her ponybride will be tying the knot around the first of September. Yay! :) - -- She's got t-shirts! I bought one with the drawing of the fox with the egg on his back on the front, and "you do not live in this world alone" on the back. - -- She's planning on working on two new albums this year, one of which is an experimental thing with Cristoph (ugh, I'm blanking on his last name and I'm too comfy here on the couch to get up and look it up, but you know, the guy who did the bleeps and bloops on the new album :). - -- She's been awarded a grant to spend some time this summer in the Yukon, literally dropping in on Inuit carvers and exploring the landscape and then she can write whatever she wants. (I'm *really* looking forward to hearing the results of that expedition!!!) That's it, I guess. Wednesday at the Mercury Lounge should be fun. P.S. Folks in Toronto should note that she's added a gig at Ted's Wrecking Yard on February 15! +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V4 #6 ******************************
