If anyone else thinks they're interesting, please include them.... Maree from Australia wants to know: Do you see yourself as part of a musical/artistic lineage? - if so, who would be the artists/musicians you would like to see yourself 'carrying on' from/for in history? (I am reminded of women like Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush & Rickie Lee Jones who entwined an 'artistic' sensibility with a courageous sense of 'pop-art' non-conformity - and not just cos they sing high!) Do you have any conscious sense of wanting to change/influence peoples' lives - do you have any conscious 'goal' to improve peoples' joy/comfort in the world in a 'deep' sense (ie other than just *entertaining* them). Do you see what you do as 'political' in any sense? ie subverting the dominant paradigm with intent.... I noticed that you had done some recording with David Travers-Smith, who I have on recordings by Oliver Schroer. Have you done any collaborating with Oliver? How can we get you to come to Australia? I know that's a lot - so probably they won't all get squeezed in... And I may end up 'borrowing' someone else's account...... Cheers, Maree ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Dec 1999 17:54:25 -0800 (PST) From: John Drummond Subject: Veda chat I'll let meth do most of the talking, since she organized it etc... but one thing I have to say to all y'all who didn't show up (it was blessedly small): YOU MISSED OUT! Veda is so charming and fun, and it was ABSOULTEY incredible to speak with her, good LORD! Ooh, and she said she may be playing a show with THE Diamanda Galás in Germany!!!!! *DYING* And she accused me of linear thought, which is pretty funny. :D John ===== "However, for all you S&M fans out there, fill your jodhpurs with whatever tickles your fancy, xoxo." - - Kym Brown __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Well, I'm not sure exactly how, but the chat went off without a hitch, once people were able to get into the room. It was a totally Murphy's Law day for me today, so I'm very happy about this! :) The only problem was that since the last time we chatted at Yahoo!, it's become impossible to log chats. :( So we don't have a record of what transpired for those who couldn't make it. I'm truly sorry about that! Veda was very gracious and put up with us for over an hour and a half. :) Here's the snippets of info that I was able to get out of the chat buffer: - - "All Fur" is about redemption through "really good sex". "Seasoned" is about hope, fear, and love (I believe this is where she accused John of not being linear enough ;). - - "26 Years" starts out in 13. It then moves into alternately 5 and 6. - - The lyric book is delayed due to financial constraints, but hopefully it will be available soon. - - The new year will see shows in the UK and Germany: with the Scrappy Bitches in London in February, then in Germany in April with the Rheostatics. There might also possibly be a gig in Germany with Diamanda Galas (!) later on. Veda will also be playing a few gigs with Oh Susanna in Jan/Feb (Portland, OR was one destination -I believe Chicago was another, and hopefully CT if I can get something going :). No real US tour plans as of yet, unfortunately. - - The new album will not be released in the US for the foreseeable future. Due to Bottom Line's imminent demise, Veda is stuck in her contract and unable to buy her way out of it. Until she gets out of the contract, she can't distribute in the US by any other channel. It's a mess. :P She's going to set up an e-commerce order thingie on vedahille.com soon, though, to make ordering direct easier. - -- She wrote a letter to the Foo Fighters, who apparently have a new album cover that's much the same concept as _Spine_. She told them if they want to continue the association she can send them the art from the latest record. - -- The sounds at the end of "Sweet" are, well, her pissing. She recorded "Bellyfish" in a warehouse bathroom, and they started the tape rolling a bit early. :) - -- I asked her if she'd read Nick Cave's novel _And The Ass Saw The Angel_, because I know she's a fan of his music and "The Boy In The Woods" sounds like a chapter from that book. Interestingly, she said she started it but couldn't finish it. Cave's music is really big with her, though. - -- Stuff she's been listening to lately: Belle and Sebastian, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Harry Belafonte, as well as Nick Cave and the new Rheostatics album, which is apparently really really good (I think the exact quote was, "the new rheos will change you and make you better" :). She thinks Sarah Slean is "young but sincere", and she hasn't been able to listen to Tori Amos since _Little Earthquakes_. - -- She wanted to know what we thought of the new web site. Consensus was good on all counts. :) Her "love" (as she termed him :) Justin took a lot of the photos on the site. - -- Rickie Lee Jones said the new album sounds like Mary Margaret O'Hara (now how's THAT for a blurb?!) - -- She's going to be writing more songs on the piano, she thinks. New projects include a score for a silent film, a score for a German radio play, and a puppet show she's doing with her family for New Year's (she said if the puppet show is any good she'll post bits on the web site - I hope she does that!). She also might be writing a song for Iarla O'Lionaird. - -- Holly Cole might do a cover of "Precious Heart" (!). - -- Her last "real" job was teaching drama in outreach schools. That was in 1993. (Lucky, lucky, lucky!!!) - -- We also discussed the relative merits of salt liquorice. Veda likes it. Some of us think it's a disgusting concept. :) I think that's all the good parts. If anyone else has anything to add, please chime in! It was a lot of fun. At one point we had 20 people in the room, from the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and Norway. Pretty amazing! Thanks to everyone who participated! Hopefully we can do it again sometime. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V3 #121 ********************************
