The evening will include many of Drake's songs performed by a roster of artists who he influenced or who've become fans, including Veda Hille and Kevin Kane (of The Grapes of Wrath), special guests Seattle singer-songwriter-pianist Robin Holcomb and Texas singer-songwriter-guitarist Ian Moore, Alberta's Kathleen Yearwood and Victoria's Daniel Lapp, jazz vocalist Kate Hammett-Vaughan and guitarist Tony Wilson working with instrumentalists Steve Fisk (guitar), Peggy Lee (cello), François Houle (clarinets), Chris Gestrin (piano/keyboards), and Simon Fisk (bass), Time Waits (featuring vocalist Koralee Tonack), singer-songwriters Herald Nix, Julie Vik, Mark Szabo, Carl Newman and Daniel Bejar, ambient sampler/deconstructionist Mark Spybey (of Dead Voices on Air) and guitarist Alexander Varty, and other performers. Some will also be presenting their own songs in Drake's honour. Nick's songs, nominally linked to the folk-rock movement, resist stylistic categorization. Poetic, mysterious, inward, and deeply felt, they continue to resonate with a bittersweet, melancholy power that seems timeless. Many artists have recorded cover versions - Lucinda Williams, Duncan Sheik, Kelly Willis, Sebadoh, The Swans, Brad Mehldau, Andy Bey, Christine Collister, Norma Waterson, and Alexis Korner among others - sometimes radically recontexting his songs, sometimes sticking closely to the originals. In this concert we'll be taking an eclectic approach. Nick's own versions range across folk, pop, classical, jazz, bossa nova, and other styles, but the artists will be bringing their own sensibility and arrangements to the material. Several vocal and instrumental collaborations are also planned. Tickets are $16 and $14 (students/seniors) and are available from Ticketmaster, Black Swan, Zulu and Highlife. The concert is being co-sponsored by the CBC. The Boys and cars make much more sense than "poison cars", but with all the rabbit imagery, etc., I thought maybe this song was inspired by Watership Down. ;) I can see rabbits seeing cars as "poison".
