So far I've got: west coast artist, performer bla, bla, bla, brooding Emily Carr thing body parts scrappy bitch tour opened for Alanis a pun: "Curriculum Veda" Well, I said to myself, that's not bad but I wondered what real fanatics would write. Being lazy and unscrupulous, I thought I'd post this and see what happens. I have my misgivings. I realise many awful things could happen: #1. I could get spammed with umpteen hundred replies with all sorts of unfounded slanderous drivel. #2. Me and my festival could get sued for plagiarism. (Dream on. I'm not getting any money for this. And folk festivals do not make money.) #3. My editor will get very pissed off. In short: I promise NOTHING. I will try and give all credit to any bio that I use, in whole or in part. Ideally, I will get one (1) and just one reply back and that reply will be perfect. It will briefly explain what is special about Veda and why she must be seen/heard. I've got a dead-line of May 28. hesitatingly, brianh@datashare.net DISCLAIMER: All the above words, views and suggestions are my own and do not reflect any policy, procedure, plan, directive, dream or notion of the Calgary Folk Festival or its programming guide. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 22:06:05 -0400 From: meredith Subject: various Hi! A few things to reply to: Nick reported: >my god, i don't know if i can go another day without hearing those new veda >songs. man, it was just so incredible. i was sitting there (Vancouver East >Cultural Centre)and was like shivering and tearing up uncontrollably the >entire time. Wow - I didn't even know she was going to be playing! The tour dates haven't been updated in a while. I'll see what I can find out about other dates that may be upcoming (especially Portland, Ryan :). >there's just somthing about veda and her band in the live >setting that is just so powerful. i guess it's kind of silly really but what >can you do. It's not silly at all. The right kind of music strikes an emotional chord, especially when it comes with a powerful delivery. Every time I see Veda play, whether it's solo or with the band, I'm touched in some way. It means you're alive. :) >and there's >this new line from a new song about wind blowing leaves through someones >doorway. (wow aren't i being precise!) Is that the slow one that goes "god beat down my door ..."? >it was really interesting tonight cuz she was opening for tribe 8 (a >hardcore band from san francisco) and you could tell she was out there to >rock in a wholesome 80's way. the entire set was pretty hard hitting and it >was quite an unexpected surprise. it just shows how diverse her and her >music is. Do you recall what the set list was? I'm curious. I assume she did "Kill Zone" (if she didn't, she really should have :)? >i ended up chatting with her briefly afterwards, didn't really have time to >get all the scoop on the new album though, oh well. i gave her a photography >project i did at school last year on the song "shamus and stone" (don't ask >me why i'm telling you all this, but i just am.) Hey, it's a Veda list - we're here to listen to things like this. :) Timothy responded: >Sorry Meredith but I can't share your opinion. I did attend her performance >at a bar in Philly this past March(?), but being only one of five people, it's >hard to imagine any impact I could have had. If you hadn't been there, there would've been only four people there. That sounds flip, but it's not meant to be. You showed your support, and even though you were 1/20th of the entire audience, Veda knew you were there to see her. True, that show probably didn't do a lot for the bottom line, but it is important that you were there. Brian inquired: >Well, I said to myself, that's not bad but I wondered what real fanatics >would write. Being lazy and unscrupulous, I thought I'd post this and see >what happens. If it helps, the answer to the question "Who Is Veda Hille?" in the list FAQ is: "Veda Hille is an amazing singer, songwriter, pianist, guitarist, and accordion player from Vancouver, B.C. who has been recording since 1991." (I'll gladly accept any suggestions for how to make that sound better, too. ;) I don't know if I'd use the term "brooding" to characterize her music - I think the term "beautiful and fierce", which she coined herself fits the best. I would also stick something in there about the Emily Carr project, since it is a Canadian festival. :) And if you want to give this list a plug while you're at it, please be my guest! +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V3 #52 *******************************
