It has to be one of the highlights of my live performance viewing year. Even without the stunning piano moods of Veda and other musicians, she was still tremendous, her voice incredibly strong yet subtle and her guitar work understatedly perfect. If I had a complaint about the show, it would be that it was completely the wrong venue for her unless you were sitting in the first row, because 1/2 the audience in the club found their loud conversations far more interesting than anything on stage. Most of the songs were shattered by the people behind me who here talking about some "smelly guy" and such. Blah. Performing before (and with, a couple of times) Oh Susanna was Toronto's Sarah Slean, who I've been hearing about repeatedly from Meredith. She was wonderful, if a bit quiet and slow for my beer swilling evening. If I were to compare her to anyone, if would be Tori Amos, if Tori Amos made apparent sense. Well worth seeing. My true joy came from talking to the two after the show, and I have to say that Oh Susanna has to be one of the nicest (for lack of a better word) people I've met. And for those of you who come to the Winnipeg Folk Festival, make sure you don't miss it this year because both Oh Susanna and Veda are playing this year. And as well, Oh Susanna and Sarah Slean (I think with the amazing Sarah Harmer, of Weeping Tile, who has one of the best voices I've ever heard) will be playing Rochester, New York either tomorrow night or in the next couple of days, so anyone in the area should go see. Anyhow, me...talking too much. Rachel Whose radio show *finally* starts on Monday. ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V3 #45 *******************************
