I've been meaning to post something about this here, but I keep forgetting. Veda appears all over Oh Susanna's new album, _Johnstown_, playing keyboards and allegedly providing backing vocals on one track (though I couldn't hear her). As most of you probably recall, Oh Susanna (a.k.a. Susie Ungerlieder) was another third of the Scrappy Bitches. I've only heard a couple brief snippets of the disc (before Rachel snatched the earphones off my head declaring "okay, that's enough for you", thanks a lot ;), but I got the impression that I'm going to like it a lot better than the live Oh Susanna experience. I've been hearing good things about it from other quarters as well. I'm not sure of the breadth of the distribution on this, but A&B Sound has it for one of their incredibly cheap prices for those of us in the States. :) I'm going to order it now. Does anyone else have it? Anything to say about it? +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 23:41:09 -0500 (CDT) From: stone Subject: Re: new oh susanna album On Sat, 10 Apr 1999, meredith wrote: > Veda appears all over Oh Susanna's new album, _Johnstown_, playing > keyboards and allegedly providing backing vocals on one track (though I > couldn't hear her). She and Kinnie are on the second track, although you can pretty much only hear Kinnie. Apparently, Veda sings on another track, but she's blatantly not there, which is a shame because that's my one complaint about the album...no harmonies. There's, like, 40 guitars on each track but only one voice. > As most of you probably recall, Oh Susanna (a.k.a. > Susie Ungerlieder) was another third of the Scrappy Bitches. How much fun is it for me to stand there and watch you listening to something that I can't hear??!! I gave you enough to get the idea. Hrmph. > but I got the impression that I'm going to like it a lot better than > the live Oh Susanna experience. I've been hearing good things about it > from other quarters as well. The arrangements are much better than her past album and her voice has grown much stronger and affective. And she's playing here in Winnipeg right now and I didn't go. Blah. > I'm not sure of the breadth of the distribution on this, but A&B Sound has > it for one of their incredibly cheap prices for those of us in the States. It can be ordered from her website, www.swellinteractive.com/ohsusanna/ > :) I'm going to order it now. Does anyone else have it? Anything to say > about it? It's the strongest work she's done, but it's absolutely smothered in the word "potential" in that I think she's good now and will be amazing by her next album. And I'd say more, but my descriptive skills are very low right now. But it's raw and evocative and has moments of sweetness without being overwhelmed by artificiality. And Veda's piano skills (on six out of the twelve tracks) really shine. Whatever. To think that I used to be an English major. Rachel Who's radio show starts on the 26th and she *still* hasn't bought (or rather, "boughten"...right Meredith?) the Emily Carr album. ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V3 #42 *******************************
