It's for Precious Heart. I've never seen the entire video, but clips from it were used in a video profile on MuchMusic a couple years ago. From what I can remember of it, Veda was standing in a prairie-like setting singing. Her hair was as wild and great as usual. - --Jim ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 20:27:24 -0500 From: cinders blue Subject: Re: bellyfish also sprach Hillary Jackson: >She did the spoken word piece about past lovers and their colors. If you know the >piece then maybe this bit of info will be of some help. this piece (which i guess is called "orange") is included on the "city folk live" cd that wfuv was giving out as a premium during their last fund drive. far as i know, you can't buy this in stores, but i suppose if you donate to wfuv, you can get a copy. check out their web site for more info about that. i'm pretty sure veda "sang" it at one of her first shows in new york a few summers ago at cb's gallery. woj ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Jan 1999 21:53:30 -0500 From: meredith Subject: videos and bellyfish Hi! Amy fonted: >I don't remember all of the video for Bellyfish now, I saw it last May >at the US release party for Spine. I mostly just remember thinking >it was very strange and enjoying the expressions on the faces of the >suits in attendance who had never experienced Veda in any manner before. I've seen bits of this video, on the MuchMusic profile Jim mentioned. In addition to the images Amy described, I remember images of Veda removing the "spine" label from her back. I wish I had the whole thing - it was quite appropriately bizarre. I thought that MuchMusic thing also showed the entire "Precious Heart" video ... or maybe the person who sent it to me had gotten the video from elsewhere. (Unfortunately, the tape that's living on is nowhere to be found, argh!) Richard commented: >I'm a harsh judge of videos, and a big (if recent) >fan of Veda's. For the most part I think this is a valid concern in general ... but at least from what I've seen of the "Bellyfish" video, I think it complements the song well. It doesn't outright tell the story of the song (which some here might find a problem :), but it uses similar imagery from the album's liner notes, and is just as freaky as the song itself. :) Speaking of which, I've always thought of "Bellyfish" as Veda's described it: a song of sexual regret, of the "what the hell was I THINKING?!?" variety. "You put that in your mouth and it's over", indeed. But I have to confess that I haven't really wanted to think about it that much. I tend to find that obscure songs like this lose a little bit when they become clear. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jan 1999 01:40:51 -0600 (CST) From: stone Subject: Re: videos and bellyfish On Thu, 21 Jan 1999, meredith wrote: > >I'm a harsh judge of videos, and a big (if recent) > >fan of Veda's. Oddly enough, the first twinge of music I ever heard by Veda was from the last few seconds of her video for "precious heart" playing with semi-slightly-moderate rotation on MuchMusic however many years ago it was. I don't recall the video particularly well, but I have vague memories of the sweeping eratic movements of the dancer around Veda and it was enough to inspire me to actually watch MuchMusic for extended periods of time to view the piece again. I've found that MuchMusic, while it does happen to play The Backstreet Boys far too much, does offer up some obscurely wonderful moments that have introduced me to the likes of Veda, which is enough to redeem it. And, sigh, I have since lost my tape of a good interview (complete with "bellyfish" video) between Veda and Sook-Yin Lee (who should be noted for occassionally asking remarkably interesting questions). And I thought I had more to say, but apparently I was wrong. Rachel. ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V3 #16 *******************************
