It was a fantastic experience and I heard everything that I'd wanted to hear. But, because of my preparations, my ride home from the show was a real disappointment. Jill and Zoe and I used the show as a reason to go visit relatives in Vienna. Since Zoe is still a bit uneasy about being left with folks, Jill decided to stay with Zoe while I ventured off to the show. I hate going to bars alone but, with Veda as the show, I went eagerly. Using the excellent advice of folks on this list, we purchased an AWIA taping walkman so that I might tape the show and the few other shows we get to attend. It is a nice gadget and, I thought, pretty easy to operate. I got to the club an hour and a half early and ordered some food--a pretty dry veggie burger :( I was lucky to get in just as Veda was doing a sound check. The bit she was using was from Driven--the song that I'd been listening to in the car! Anyway, I met Veda and Emily, talked a very short while (I get nervous in the presence of goddesses) and got permission to tape (just so I'd not sell the tapes and such--I even told her that I'd make copies available to the list if it came out ok.) She was very nice as was Emily. This show was just Veda so there was no band. The show was fantastic. I placed my self in a good spot and held as still as I could. Of course, a group of folks stood next to me and chatted loudly about getting drunk the night before. (Why do people like this go to places with live music???!) So, I moved to another good location. I really can't remember all the songs and patter between them. Usually I take notes on things like this but I was taping. I'd be able to recreate the moment in my car on the way home. Some of the pieces I remember-- Slumber Queen INSTRUCTIONS 26 years One hot summer Bellyfish Peculiar Value Some pieces from the Emily Carr series (which were fantastic but I've been listening to it in the car and they're not all that separate in my head yet so I don't have any titles) A spoken word piece that was really reallly really good And several more that I can't remember. Anyway, after Veda was done, I thanked Emily and hurried out (ready to get out of a bar!) so I could listen to the tape. I found my car easily and it hadn't been towed. These were good omens. I unlocked, jumped in and put the tape into the deck, set the deck to rewind and turned on the car. I headed back toward Vienna. After what seemed an eternity, the tape clicked and I waited. The radio came on. Hall and Oates--that Maneater song. I pulled over to check the deck. It wasn't the radio. Somehow I'd taped the radio--not even a good radio station!--and got nothing at all of the show. What had happened was that I'd bumped a little button somehow and switched the walkman over to radio. This was not a good thing :( though it was wonderful to actually hear (and see) Veda play. The foot tapping while she plays keyboards is pretty neat--adding a rhythm "track." And that is the sad tale. I have nothing to offer folks tape wise. . . It was a great show. I'm actually glad to have been able to see her alone before I see her with a band. Now, if only I can get her down south to play! take care all, brad Accuracy of observation is the equivalent of accuracy of thinking. - --Wallace Stevens ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V2 #122 ********************************
