Next Saturday, May 16 the Connecticut Ballet will present "Romeo & Juliet", featuring recorded music by artists including Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams, and Sarah McLachlan, and a live song performed by Veda Hille (the only live accompaniment). There will be two performances, at 2pm & 8pm at the Palace Theatre, 61 Atlantic St., Stamford. Tickets are $40 for orchestra & grand tier, $20 for mezzanine, $10 for students & seniors. For more information, you can call the box office at (203) 325-4466. I know no more than this -- I think I'm going, though! I'm always willing to broaden my cultural horizons. :) If anyone else from the list is interested in joining me, drop me a line and maybe I can get us all tickets in a group. I just wanted to let y'all know that I've added a new feature to the trajectory web site: a News Flash page, where I will put all of the tidbits of news related to Veda Hille gigs, releases, radio appearances, miscellaneous performances etc., as well as any list-related happenings that may occur in future. The URL is . I've also provided an easy link at the bottom to NetMind, which will allow you to sign up to receive an e-mail message every time the page is updated, thus saving you from having to remember to check back for updates at regular intervals. I hope people find this page is a useful resource. My intent is to provide a complement to Veda's official home page, and I'll go out of my way to avoid posting redundant information. If anyone has any suggestions or news to add to the page, please e-me privately. Thanks! +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 May 1998 17:01:15 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Veda at CB's Gallery Hi again, I'll go away after this, I promise. :) I'm surprised nobody got to writing about Veda's knockout performace at CB's Gallery last Thursday before now -- I figured since I wouldn't have time immediately, someone would surely beat me to it. woj, Mike Curry and I arrived quite early, not too far into the 7:00 slot, Gerald Blair's set. His was rather uninspired acoustic man-mit-guitar music, and while a couple of his songs were mildly interesting, he got boring really quickly. He had a whole entourage with him that took up most of the tables by the stage, so we hung out in back by the bar until his turn was over and some tables opened up right in front. Michael Abram appeared not long after we did, so we all took our places in front of where the electric piano got set up. Veda was by herself. She did the following set: Strange, Sad Slumber Queen Bellyfish Once In A Lifetime (yes, the Talking Heads classic :) Noah's Ark Driven 26 Years (encore) I think that's all -- I feel like I'm forgetting one, though. Anyone else remember? The new songs were both done on the guitar, and they were both really, really good. The former has a chorus that goes something like, "love is not strong enough/we are too strong for love" (not an exact quote, but that's the gist), and I'd already heard of the second song as "the fucking in the kitchen song". :) Veda noted as she was tuning for it that one effect of going away to an island for a month to write music is that you come up with really weird tunings. :) I'd wager we'll be hearing quite a few new songs in Veda's setlists in the next few months, which is definitely something to look forward to. "Once In A Lifetime" was a gas. Veda had mentioned earlier on that she was having a really good time in New York, and she'd seen David Byrne a few nights previous, which I guess is what inspired that addition to the set list. She did it on piano, which was a neat twist. "Driven" was played in honor of listmember Hillary's birthday, and I think it was the best rendition of it I've heard yet. I repeat, Hillary, you rule. :) "26 Years" was by request of pretty much everyone at the front tables, once it became apparent that the 9:00 performer hadn't arrived yet, and Veda had a bit more time than expected. (Yay!) It was interesting to note that the place was packed while Veda was on stage, and by the time the 9:00 gig started the room was quite empty. She got a great response from the appreciative crowd. Afterwards I briefly got to meet Kevin from Bottom Line Records, as well as Veda's manager Emily, both of whom are very cool. Also, I saw WFUV's Rita Houston, who is going to be interviewing Veda on the air sometime this week. I'll let you all know when. Rita said she was amused to get a call from a WFUV listener the other day reporting that he'd just seen Veda Hille walking down the street in the East Village, and did Rita know if she was going to be playing anytime soon? Imagine that - a Sighting! :) How thrilling. I don't know if that caller ended up at the show, though. I think Veda is really enjoying her time in New York, too. She'll be in town until the end of the month. She said she's going to try to go see Kristin Hersh at the Knitting Factory tonight, and I hope she can get in, because she's in for a real treat. We saw Kristin there on both Friday and Saturday, and both shows were unbelievably good. Amy, how did the interview go? You can't get much more gritty and real-life than interviewing someone from a sidewalk on the Bowery. :) It was great to meet you. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY: the Veda Hille mailing list *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V2 #40 *******************************
