Just discovered the list today, got subbed up, thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Bonnie, I'm in Boston (Somerville, actually) MA, USA and I seem to be one of only two people around here who has had the remarkable good fortune of having heard of Veda Hille! I was introduced to her Veda's music last summer; a co-worker went home to Vancouver for a week and came back all pumped up because he'd gotten a copy of her Women in (E)motion cd, which he offered to let me borrow for a spin. I popped it into the cd-rom drive and I was instantly a fan. I loved it immediately. Since then all I've had is a cassette copy of that cd... until last weekend when I found, for the first time despite much searching (and we have a lot of music stores in the greater Boston area!), a cd of hers to buy: a used copy of Spine. Finding this gem has re-ignited my interest and today, after a little spin through Excite's search engine and a couple of well-placed clicks, I found this list! Finally -- other fans!!! I also found Veda's own site so I'll be ordering the other cds pretty damn soon! Now if only Veda would come play in Boston.... :-) So...who all is out there? bb ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Apr 1998 20:13:03 -0400 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: Re: Welcome Me...? Hey, add another one to the Boston count! I live in Reading, MA. I first heard of Veda thru the ecto mailing list (see www.smoe.org/lists) and then thru Meredith. I've had the pleasure of seeing her live (at the Scrappy Bitch tour in Northampton). I can't wait to see her again in NYC... BTW, if you're looking for other music, take a look at the Ectophiles Guide to Good Music (http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/). There's an excellent review of Veda there. Now if we could just get her to play in Boston (-: Jeff ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Apr 1998 20:06:46 -0500 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: Welcome Me...? Welcome, Bonnie! I was lucky enough to be introduced to Veda's music in the summer of '94 by a good friend I'd met through the Ecto list (actually, I was even on my way to the first west coast gathering of people from the list). He had her first tape in his car's player and we went, pretty directly if I recall, right downtown to A&B Sound in Vancouver and bought a copy of the tape and the newly release _path of a body_. I played the tape at the gathering hoping people would perk up and listen, but we were all too busy talking. Anyway, over the years Veda's work has continued to grow on me, and with the release of _spine_ it was clear to me that Veda was rapidly becoming the most essential artist in my ever-expanding music collection. Since we live in Seattle, we've been lucky enough to hear her live several times and it's always wonderful (_Women & Emotion_ doesn't quite capture it, but almost). Anyway, I'm glad you're here. I wonder if the list will start growing in leaps & bounds after the U.S. release of _spine_ on May 5. I'll be happy for her if it does but a little sad if the intimate concerts I'm used to stop happening and Veda has to move to the really big concert venues. It will be great to hear her anywhere, but it won't be the same. Somehow, since I've heard her as often as I can and because I was there for the cd release concerts of both _spine_ and _here is a picture_, I feel involved in her music. She's a great musician and songwriter, and a damn cool person, too. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Apr 1998 17:01:25 From: meredith Subject: Re: Welcome Me...? I guess it's good that you found it, but I always hate to see good stuff in the used bins like that. :( Fortunately, come May 5 you should be able to find _Spine_ in any well-stocked record store in the U.S., because that's when Bottom Line Records will be officially releasing it down here. Yay. >Finally -- other fans!!! :) We're a small, very quiet group, but we exist. Fear not. :) >I also found Veda's own site so I'll be ordering the other cds pretty damn >soon! Definitely do that. They're all must-haves. >Now if only Veda would come play in Boston.... :-) Hey, you never know. She'll be spending a chunk of time in New York City this spring, and I know she'd love to play as many places as she can. If you have any ideas for where would be good places for her to play in Boston, either post them here or send them directly to me, and I'll forward them to her manager. At the very least, I expect to be able to see her at the Iron Horse in Northampton sometime in the not too distant future. I know she knocked their socks off when she was there with the Scrappy Bitch Tour last November. Neile responded: >Anyway, I'm glad you're here. It took long enough. >I'll be happy >for her if it does but a little sad if the intimate concerts I'm used to >stop happening and Veda has to move to the really big concert venues. It >will be great to hear her anywhere, but it won't be the same. Agreed. There's just something way cool about sitting in a room with 30 other people watching her play. However, there would be something way cool about sitting in a room with 300 other people watching her play, too. If we started to get to a room holding 3,000 other people, it might get a bit weird. I think she could definitely carry a larger venue, though. She has such a commanding stage presence, she'd have the audience in the palm of her hand by the time the first song had ended (especially if that first song were along the lines of "Driven" :). If history is any guide, May 7th's CB's Gallery show may be her last there; she was well on her way to outgrowing the place last time. I know she wants to play the Mercury Lounge, which is definitely a step up (I've seen some great shows there, most notably Katell Keineg last year), and I think she could sell a respectable amount of tickets headlining at the Bottom Line too. Both are venues which can hold about 200 people or so. If I ever see her at someplace like Radio City Music Hall or the Oakdale Theater (where I just saw Sarah McLachlan last week), then it will be time to keel over and die. Whether from shock that the American public could possibly be moved by such complex and thought-provoking music or just out of sheer disbelief, I can't say. :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V2 #25 *******************************
