I'm sure this is going to come as a surprise to no one, but Veda and the boys kicked butt Thursday night at the Bottom Line. :) I have to say the performance wasn't as transcendant as the last CB's Gallery show, but it was wonderful. The set list appeared to me to be engineered to wow a room full of people who were mostly there to see someone else, and by all accounts it worked. Here's the early set: 26 Years Bellyfish Song for Snake Pause Sweet One Hot Summer With No Caring INSTRUCTIONS To And From Ira Slumber Queen Halfway through "One Hot Summer", the woman at the table next to me turned to her friend and declared, "This is f*cking COOL!" :) As happened last time at the Bottom Line, the entire room sat in awed silence as Barry played the saw on "Sweet". It was especially neat for me this time, because I was sitting really close to the front, and it was fascinating to watch the process of playing that saw. :) I had dragged my best friend along to the show, because she's been hearing me rave on and on about Veda for months now and she finally decided to come and see what all the fuss has been about. The saw thing led her to the conclusion that yep, Veda's pretty cool. :) My only quibble (besides the usual "it was way too short" :), is that the tempo of "26 Years" seemed really slow to me. I would have started the set with "Slumber Queen" and ended with "26 Years", but hey. It was still great. Much better than the main act, Freedy Johnston, who was nice, and I'm glad I got to see him once, but I don't think I'll be going out of my way to see him again. Really, after Veda's taken the stage it's a tall order to find someone to follow her who doesn't pale in comparison. A said hi to Veda for a couple minutes afterwards. She said it looks like she'll be back in the New York area in April, with the full band. She's trying to line up a gig at the Mercury Lounge next time -- someplace a bit less expensive (and "less hoity-toity" :) than the Bottom Line. I desperately wanted to try to sneak in for the second set, but it was getting late and reason prevailed, so we went home. I know there was at least one listmember planning to be in attendance at the late show -- do tell! Veda said she was going to do a different set, so what's the scoop? The month of February will find Veda on a secluded island (presumably near Vancouver), writing. Hopefully that will mean some new songs for the next round of shows. :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | |***TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: trajectory-request@smoe.org***| +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V2 #5 ******************************
