And veda's voice (despite the strep throat) was AMAZING! She was in REALLY good voice! And I couldn't have been more thrilled that she opened with "strange, sad", since that's my personal fave. The following night, veda appeared at the Bottom Line amidst a GARGANTUAN lineup, to celebrate local DJ Vin Scelsa who was having his 50th birthday and his 30th anniversary on the air at the same time. As always, there were 2 shows scheduled at the Bottom Line: 7:30 and 10:30, doors open 1/2 hour before. The 1st show sold out FAST, and consequently my friend Amy and I had tix for the late show. Let me put this politely: we got IN the door at midnight. The late show did not begin until 12:30am and ended close to 4am, I imagine, since I left around 3:20am. While we stood outside on line (for 2 hours!) an older gentleman passed out on the sidewalk (a 6' 3" man makes a terrible thud when his head hits concrete!) and went into shock from the cold. Not a very auspicious beginning... Anyhow, as promised the lineup was incredible: Lou Reed (sorry, don't remember what he played), Graham Parker, Marshall Crenshaw, Jules Shear & Suzzy Roche (from Jules' new Duets album...not real intriguing, though), Lori Carson (sang something pretty but it felt like a dirge at that hour), Al Kooper & Jimmy Vivino ("Write Me A Few Lines"--one of the shows true standout numbers, completely rocked the house with twangy blues/rock), Dar Williams ("Are You Out There"), They Might Be Giants, Jill Sobule ("At the Gym" and a very funny birthday ditty), Don Byron (THE BEST! Absolutely riveting, the greatest moment of the evening in my mind and I'd been practically comatose by the time he went on), Dana Bryant (spoken word poetess, also INCREDIBLE!), Bobbi (?) Tipson (?) (from Orlando--I thoroughly enjoyed her, but obviously didn't quite catch her name)...and veda! Veda sang "26 years" at the late show, which was great, but truly I was beyond tired by then and I couldn't see her cuz we had crappy seats. But I shrieked as loud as I could anyway and I hope she knew I was out there...shortly thereafter I went home. Happily, she got this writeup in NEWSDAY, the Long Island/Brooklyn/Queens daily in this morning's edition: "Among lesser-known artists, Canadian singer-songwriter Veda Hille cast a spell with her ululating, Eastern-tinged "Slumber Queen." (he saw the early show, lucky dog) You go girl! Be well, Hilleans... Jeff Donaldson-Forbes ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V1 #41 *******************************
