Veda still does perform "79 Rose" live--she prefers to do it when she has lots of time and she and the band really do a jamming version of it. I last heard at at the Railway Club and it was a wonderful, knockout version. I don't think I've heard any of the other songs since before _Spine_ came out. Is anyone totally stuck on "Conversations with the Dead"? That song haunts me. And "I Dance Alone" is a great song to play as a pick me up. I defy anyone to listen to that without moving. I like "Laine" but can't listen to it without Joni Mitchell's "Ladies of the Canyon" coming into my head. The songs do sound younger in tone and sound, but only in relation to her later work. Hearing that tape was enough to make me an instant fan. Oh, and I didn't report to the list about Veda's 11/20 concert here in Seattle opening for Dan Bern. She was, of course, wonderful, even though when we talked to her before she went on she said she wasn't feeling that well. Her voice was in great form, and it was fascinating to watch the audience warn up to her as the songs went along, the applause getting more and more enthusiastic. And there were other people there just to hear her, I was delighted to discover. I was expecting a huge line by the cd sales, but the crowd seemed pretty focused on Dan Bern. Personally, after listening to the stuff online of his I left before he even started. I'm hoping to get up to Vancouver for the launch of the Emily disc at the Cultch (I think Veda said it's on the 24th), but I hope she plays Seattle again soon! And I'm thrilled that she's going to be getting U.S. distribution at last. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ..... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ..... neile@sff.net The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music .... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Dec 1997 22:16:52 -0500 From: meredith Subject: News Update Hi! Here's an update from Veda re next week's gigs: >the band is coming >with me, but I may have to play the cbs gig solo (it's at 10:00, did I tell >you that?) if there is no gear there ( we can't take a drum kit on the >plane). the knitting factory is not going to happen this time, next time >hopefully. Too bad about the Knitting Factory. Oh well. Solo or mit Combo, the CB's gig will surely rock. :) I don't know who else is playing there that night, but not too far away Mila Drumke is playing at 9, so I'm contemplating catching at least part of that beforehand. Dunno. (Mila Drumke is a really really good artist from Chicago who has two independently released albums out and everyone should check her out. There are sound samples and such at . If anyone saw the movie _Go Fish_ a few years back, she provided the way cool song that ran over the credits.) That's always a nice surprise. :) I'm guessing there will be a nice crowd at CB's Gallery next week, judging by the response she's been getting at her previous NYC shows. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | |***TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: trajectory-request@smoe.org***| +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V1 #38 *******************************
