Abram" Subject: Glenn Gould etc. Greetings Hilleans! Our yadayada love Kat recommended Glenn Gould's recording of J.S.Bach's Goldberg Variations. I can recommend his recording of the six Partitas, which can be found on Sony SM2K 52597, along with Preludes and Fugues. My edition on Columbia vinyl has the Two and Three Part Inventions along with the Partitas. I often listen to it while driving to Canada each summer. In addition to his towering talent, Gould is known for audibly humming along with his playing. I also recommend the movie made about him in 1993 called Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould -- it's fascinating! I got a personal note from Bob Moog today -- here's a relevant excerpt: Thanks also for taking me out to Houston Street and exposing me to the current New York music scene. I really enjoyed it!!!! So the evening with you was a rare opportunity. In fact, it was downright exotic. I'll remember it and think about it for a long while! Plus, now I know one of the Scrappy Bitches personally. How hip can you get when you're a tired old moogerfooger living in western North Carolina? And lastly, I saw Sarah in concert last night - heaven on earth I do declare. Hugs all around, Michael "I'm making a sculpture from the wax in my ears" -- I'm Weird (a BTT production) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Oct 1997 23:04:16 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Book on Glenn Gould Hi! Michael, it's great to see that Mr. Moog enjoyed hearing and meeting Veda so much! That's just too cool. (I'd mentioned to someone I work with that I'd met Robert Moog, and apparently she's been mightily impressing her friends by stating that she knows someone who met the man. I find that odd, but amusing. :) kat shared: >This just in from Time Magazine: >Why is this relevant? Well as I am sure you all know, Glenn Gould was a >Brilliant (capitilzation intentional) classical piannist. He retired from >concert play at age 31 but continued as an essayist . Anyhow, Veda Hille lists Gould as an influence in her music. I'm not as familiar with Gould's work as I feel I should be; perhaps that's because I prefer ensemble works to solo piano, especially when it comes to my all-time favorite musical era, the Baroque. I did, however, see _32 Short Films About Glenn Gould_ when it was in the theaters a few years back, and I agree with Michael that it was fascinating stuff, both in terms of content and just as a film in general. I highly recommend it. The actor who portrayed Glenn Gould was amazing. Michael noted: >In addition to his towering talent, Gould is known for audibly >humming along with his playing. Ah, so Tori Amos is not alone. ;> >And lastly, I saw Sarah in concert last night - heaven on earth I do >declare. Y'know, I was just marveling at the fact that I've been reading concert reports and reminding myself that she's playing in NYC right now as I type and I'm not there, and I'm not feeling even a pang of regret. How scary is that? This from the person who attended no fewer than 11 stops on the Fumbling tour, and would have gladly turned out for more if given the chance. I think there's something wrong with me. Either that, or Sarah's just simply outgrown me. I've moved on to other artists whose talents I have yet to fully discover, who are still struggling for recognition and who are playing in venues conducive to conversation with them afterwards. Veda would be on the top of that list. I get the feeling she's not out to conquer the world, and her goal in life isn't to play in basketball arenas and get her face plastered all over eMpTV. I sincerely hope that feeling is close to the truth. (I don't want to sound like I don't wish Veda all the success and recognition she deserves -- that's not what I mean at all. I would just hate to see her reduced to "flavor of the month" status, that's all.) Well, enough of that elitist ranting. :) +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | Boonton, NJ USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | |***TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: trajectory-request@smoe.org***| +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Oct 1997 23:12:55 -0400 From: meredith Subject: oh yeah. Hi! Apparently copies of the Emily Carr cycle, _Here Is A Picture_ exist. I know of at least one, which is being played in a CD player in Vancouver as I type by someone who, I'm sure, mentioned it just to get me all riled up just when I should be winding down for sleep. :) So I'm sharing my pain with you all. In NYC, Veda mentioned a January release date, but it should be available "on the net" (I'm assuming that means via her web page) earlier than that. Hopefully a lot earlier! As in, a couple months. Sigh. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | Boonton, NJ USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | |***TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: trajectory-request@smoe.org***| +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of trajectory-digest V1 #27 *******************************
