The subject of Beth's lobster joke came up on The Archival Group. She's told this joke several times in concert, and I'll be damned if I can understand what she's saying at the punchline. Still, other people laugh mirthfully at this conundrum, and it only vexes me so! Oh, vexed Beth fan that I am, have pity on me, and if thou hast ears to divine the punchline, speak I say and out with it! The joke goes something like this... A lobster walks into a bar. The lobster asks the barman for a pint of lager. The barman promptly throws the lobster out. The geezer standing next to the lobster says 'What'd you do that for?'. And the barman says....???? It sounds something like "He was giving me all that." If so, what does that mean and why is it funny? In a related note, the first time I heard "Sweetest Decline" I swear I misunderstood the lyric "it's like catching snow on my tongue" to be "it's like, can't you smell my tongue?" I had no idea why her tongue should smell, but I greatly respected her for breaking new lyrical ground. Are there any other misunderstood Beth lyrics out there?
