I was very excited to see Beth play in my hometown of Madison. I dragged along a few of my friends who really didn't know what she was about. One radio station here in town occasionally plays Concrete Sky, but that's about it. The show seemed to be sold out, but I'm not sure. There sure were not a lot of empty seats. The opening act was a pianist named Mark Mallman. He was pretty good. He kind of had a Billy Joel/Paul McCartney/Roger Waters thing going on. He was funny too. At one point he stopped mid song and told the audience that usually he has a band backing him up, so we should try to imagine that. He also talked about how much the latest Dana Carvey movie sucked. "Turtle turtle turtle". hehe. Of course it was Beth we all came for and what a great show she put on! Beth seemed like she was in a good mood. She joked about how she couldnt see anybody in the audience because it was all dark. She wore a big black leather coat and seemed quite relaxed. I was amazed at how great her voice sounded and how much sound the acoustic set produced. I was a little afraid that the stripped down band might lack energy and be too mellow. My fears were unfounded though as they sounded great. Very tight. My favorite song of the night was Bobby Gentry. Beth put down her guitar and played a tambourine. She was really jamming! The whole audience seemed to really get into it. It was a very upbeat version. I would love to get a copy of it. They really played for a long time and managed to cover most of my favorite songs. At one point near the end of the show she joked that she supposed we were wondering if they would ever stop. If it was up to me, they would still be playing. My friends agreed that it was a top-notch performance and I think they have a new appreciation for Ms Ortons talent as a songwriter and a performer. If you get a chance to catch one of these acoustic performances -Do yourself a favor and go! Great stuff! I tried to write down the set list when I got home from the show. Im not sure about the order after the first 6 songs. That could have something to do with the several glasses of Spotted Cow beer I drank! :) galaxy of emptiness paris train mount washingoton sweetest decline bobby gentry carmella blood red river love like laughter GodSon She Cries your name couldnt cause me harm stolen car stars all seem to weep its not the spotlight OK someones daughter central reservation feel to believe concrete sky sugar boy Wish I never saw the sunshine Ali's waltz Where Do You Go Regards, Dan Tiedeman ------------------------------ End of trailer-park-digest V3 #118 **********************************
