Agree that the reviewer of single "Concrete Sky" is being somewhat obscure, but a lot of it doesn't sound complimentary ("straw-sucking folk-fluffery"?). Reviewer of DAYBREAKER claims Beth is mysterious and elusive and finds it strange that someone who wants to be a singer-songwriter doesn't care about communicating. Anyone relate to Beth's work this way? I find nothing elusive about the emotions Beth generates in her songs, and anyway singer-songwriters can be completely great while wearing many masks and without revealing all (Dylan being the ultimate example). So I went out and bought Trailer Park (it was less expensive than the other one and I'm really very cheap). I do relate to her stuff that way actually, but I disagree with the reviewer - there's really nothing unusual about singer/ songwriters painting obscure pictures, and it's just a different kind of communication. She certainly doesn't come across as mysterious or elusive in interviews. Very down-to-earth, in fact, if her comment about 'seven strapping lads that sort me right out' on Saturday morning is anything to go by. Nearly choked on my toast .. I adored the plaintive, delicate acoustic version of Concrete Sky as well. Glad I had the MD recorder running. james ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jul 2002 19:11:42 -0400 From: "Chris Beckwith" Subject: Direct link to Beth's profile on NPR's "Morning Edition" Real Player required: rtsp://audio.npr.org:554/me/20020724_me_16.rm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jul 2002 19:35:07 -0400 From: "Chris Beckwith" Subject: Beth's NME reviews NME reviewers generally harbour a deep disdain for any singles remotely smacking of folk; another prime example is this review of the new (totally ace IMHO) Gemma Hayes single: http://www.nme.com/reviews/10764.htm Note also the obsession with image; the reviewer says Gemma is no name for a pop star! But in the end it gets a good review. As for the "Daybreaker" album review, it appears the reviewer simply can't come to grips with what makes Beth special, hence the "mysterious" tag. Take care, Chris ------------------------------ End of trailer-park-digest V3 #60 *********************************
