After we checked into our hotel a few blocks from the Metro where she was playing that night, we decided to make a Thai food run. As we were walking out of the hotel, my husband stopped and said "did you see who that was?". I wasn't sure who he was talking about since we'd walked past several people. He pointed out the woman at the front desk with her back to us. She was tall, wearing a big floppy hat and red pants. From the back she could have passed for a tall skinny elderly bag lady. He mentioned he'd heard her asking for messages for Orton. She had also asked for a key to her room. We turned back and headed for the front desk to ask if it had indeed been Beth Orton, figuring they probably wouldn't confirm it for us but what the heck. Before we could ask any questions I noticed her standing a few feet away getting a cup of coffee. I walked up to her and asked if she was Beth Orton which she confirmed. I was so flabberghasted at actually running into her there that I couldn't think of much to say. I did mention we'd driven to town to see her show and that I loved her music. She thanked me with a sweet smile and asked if we had our tickets. I said yes. Not knowing what else to say (or wanting to seem fanatical), I mentioned it was a pleasure meeting her and we left. I was so thrilled I couldn't stop grinning. I just felt bad I couldn't find the words to express how much I really love her music. Anyway, we arrived at the show a couple of hours later and discovered that it was sold out which was why she was probably asking whether we already had tickets. There were a ton of people outside asking to buy any extra tickets we might have. There was also a sign on the door announcing her return to Chicago on August 6th. Needless to say, Beth Orton's part of the show was incredible. I admire those of you who've published set lists of the tour. We were so squeezed together a couple of feet from the stage and there would have been no way for me to make notes. Her practically full orchestra bandmates were awesome also. I'd been looking forward to hearing the opening band since they're from Louisville. They were disappointing. It was a loud, typical modern hard rock band whose signature seems to be tossing their very hairy heads around in a manner that their hair would completely obstruct their face. This was their only real talent and to me was a bit off putting. Regardless the show was awesome and I was pleased and surprised that there were so many people there who had even heard of Beth Orton. The few we talked to had discovered her after hearing one of her songs on the Bounce soundtrack. P.S. None of the photos I've seen of Ms. Orton do her justice. She is utterly gorgeous in person with a triangular face and beautiful eyes and smile. She's very "girlish", almost precocious. Very sweet. On 4 Jun 2002, at 11:49, John F. Beth's show in San Franciso 2 weeks ago was a sell out. I tried for a week to get a ticket without any success, so I went to the show with sign in hand and managed to buy a $20 ticket for $25 (which is what I would have paid if I had bought through TicketBastard). I met another guy at the concert that needed a ticket and he was able to buy his ticket at the box-office for FACE value. If you get there early enough, there are almost always late returned or unused comp tickets available. However, when Beth comes back this fall, I'm buying my tickets IN ADVANCE!
