I've just got back from seeing Beth at Northampton with Nick Grundy from this list. We were lucky enough to have front row seats, and I left him at the Stage Door, where he was going to wait for Beth to come out and hopefully sign his 'IWINSTS@ single - I hope you saw her Nick. Shack were good (IMO), and played for 35-40 minutes Beth and the band came on at 9:02pm, and played :- Galaxy of Emptiness Blood Red River Stars All Seem to Weep Stolen Car Love Like Laughter Pass in Time Sweetest Decline She Cries Your Name (The Joke) Devil Song (New Song) Thinking About Tomorrow Whenever Someone's Daughter (With a snippet of 'Norwegian Wood') Central Reservation Dolphins Encores :- (Solo) Feel to Believe I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine Touch Me with Your Love Finish about 10:20pm - a good show, if a little low key - but that's the nature of the beast with a Beth show. If anyone is going to Norwich tomorrow please look out for me - I'll be wearing a rust coloured shirt and a brown leather jacket Cheers Neil PS - my tape came out really well ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 01:42:51 +0100 From: Nick Grundy Subject: Re: (Beth) Gig on 26th Oct at Northampton At 12:50 AM 10/27/99 +0100, you wrote: > >I've just got back from seeing Beth at Northampton with Nick Grundy from >this list. I did indeed, and got a signature and a peck on the cheek - awwwwww. >Someone's Daughter (With a snippet of 'Norwegian Wood') *That's* what it was - right at the end, yes? I meant to ask - how did it go again? Anyway, briefly, low-key it may have been, but I was *seriously* impressed. I hadn't seen her live before, and wasn't sure what to expect, chiefly from the vocal point of view - some singers really struggle live to reproduce the sound or range they get on record, and I wasn't sure how Beth would hold up live. Unbelievable Truth are a good example - when I saw them in London (I think you were there too, weren't you Neil?), the singer did 'Almost Here' as an encore, and, although it sounded good throughout, you could tell he was struggling to sustain some of the notes, and his voice cracked right at the end, prompting a (rather amusing) forehead slap. This wasn't the case with Ms. Orton. The best word I can find to describe her vocals is probably "effortless", with an honourable mention to "incredible". She just seemed to hit every note on the nose without even looking like she was trying, and the range was pretty unbelievable too; singing both parts of "Dolphins" (ok, she didn't actually sound like Terry Callier, but I'm sure you know what I mean) was no mean feat. I was going to say that it blew me away, but on reflection, it wasn't really that sort of gig. It was more engaging than that and, while it was perhaps less startling, it did make the music a lot more approachable somehow. I'm not sure it being low-key was all bad; I certainly found it quite a different experience to the one I was expecting. Having heard the penguin joke she told on the US tour (on the list - thanks, whoever that was!), I couldn't see quite how it would fit in with the songs. In the event, Beth had this sort of endearingly awkward stage manner which just seemed to work with the music. The Northampton Joke is probably a good example: "What did one leg say to the other leg? Between you and me, it stinks." She then said "Actually, I don't know what that means, someone just told it to me." and "Sorry - I didn't want to spoil the mood..." Kind of apologetic, but it just worked, even immediately after Someone's daughter and before Central reservation. (Interesting version of CR, incidentally - kind of really stripped down. Although that may just be because I've been listening to the remixes too much!) The New Song was good, too. Right. I'm off to bed, so I won't bore you all with my late-night babblings any longer. Anyone going to the Friday Shepherd's bush gig? Nick. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Oct 1999 22:26:52 -0400 From: "Chris Beckwith" Subject: Re: Afterglow ROCHEK@uk.ibm.com wrote: > Has anyone listened to Dot Allison - "Afterglow" Just got it today and I > have it on at work.....very relaxing I'm almost asleep. I got it a few weeks ago. Definitely one of the year's best, along with Dido's debut. Dot's gotten raves pretty much across the board for both the album and her live gigs. Not to be missed, especially if you miss Beth's old electronica style. Take care, Chris ------------------------------ End of trailer-park-digest V2 #202 **********************************
