Hi This is my first mail to this list. I started listening to Beth when Central Reservation came out and bought Trailer Park almost immediately after. I've seen Beth twice, at the Big Day Out in Adelaide on a 40 degree Celsius Day - despite the heat she was amazing, though I'm sure she doesn't remember the gig very favourably. Then, after saving my pennies during my last year of school I sent myself to the UK to travel for a while and managed to get to her Jan gig (Thanks to the listees who mentioned this:)) This would have to be one of the best performances I've seen - coming from talent starved Adelaide this isn't that impressive - the bar, looking over the Thames with the lights of London and then, after the huge wait, Beth in all her splendour...can't help thinking that the fire alarm was a little to conveniently provided for with the waiver on the ticket though...Anyway, does anyone else have memories of their favourite Beth gig/moment to share? Aus stuff*** having a dodgy old car with its original AM only radio and only ever listening to JJJ in Aus has meant I've been oblivious to the exploits of Nelly. I think I may force myself through the bad 'top 40' end of rage to see her stuff. Also does anyone agree that JJJ has gradually been on the decline in the past couple of years? Can't wait to see Beth's movie debut, but will it ever be shown here? probably only at obscure festivals etc. Sorry for writing so much - will promise not to write for anor. 6 months. If you're like me, you don't know much about these things, or how to protect against them. There is a great website @ http://www.getvirushelp.com that explains all about the latest things going around. There is also a free cleaner for Happy99 if you receive the fireworks display and run it. (This "worm" attaches itself to your emails and newsgroup postings and you won't even know it's being sent.) Your computer cannot be infected unless you ran happy99.exe, so, if you don't run an attachment with fireworks, then you don't have to worry about this particular virus. (But there's so many others out there, you may, as I did, want to check out these dangers and be informed.) Anyway, just wanted to let you know what I've been told. Go to http://www.getvirushelp.com and, if you've run an attachment, with fireworks, then click "select virus", in the top right hand of the screen, and choose "Happy99" then follow the step-by-step instructions. Hopefully this warning is unneccessary, but, as ever, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. cheers, Adrian Below is a excerpt from the site which explains: What is Win32/Ska.A? Happy99.exe is a Win32-based e-mail and newsgroup worm. It alters a file that your computer uses whenever you send out an email message or newsgroup posting so that every message that goes out has the virus attached to it. It does not corrupt any data on your hard drive or make your computer crash. It just attaches itself to your email and newsgroup messages. How do I get it? Happy99.exe arrives as an email attachment or news message attachment. Double clicking the Happy99.exe program infects your computer. You know that you're infected when you see a window named "Happy New Year 1999 !!" that contains a display of moving fireworks. Don't run the program and you won't get infected. Who's at risk? People running Microsoft Windows95, Windows98, or WindowsNT are at risk. MacOS and WebTV are immune to the virus. WindowsNT machines will display the fireworks. However, when you close the "Happy New Year 1999 !!" window on some WinNT machines, the program crashes and does not infect the computer. One of her greenhouse tomatoes! Hiya... That day so wasn't 40 degrees, it was supposed to be, but it was overcast and hence must have fallen short. I went this year and it was friggin 40 degrees I'm sure of it, the sun was out this time. I saw Augie March on the same "greenhouse" stage as the year before, and wished it was the year before again and I was seeing Beth! All those memories flooded back. Why wouldn't she remember the gig favourably? 'Cos someone threw water at her? I'm sure it wasn't the end of the world. Wish she'd tour again, a non-festival tour, I'd die for that!! Now Miss Fellow Adelaidian... You said: >coming from talent starved Adelaide this isn't that impressive I can't believe you'd say that? I live close to the music scene and in the past year I've really got into the local acts... And I hate it when people say things like that. I think the local acts are the most important, it's our art, it's our culture.. and if you don't have a local culture you really lose something special and unique. And the Adelaide band scene is in trouble thanks to council's bylaws and regulations and inner city development and yuppies who move into "happening" areas of the city then whine about the noise and get everything shut down, bands aren't even allowed to put posters up on the streets anymore. I think there is sooo much unique and special honest talent in Adelaide and we're going to lose it if we don't fight for it. People are so fucking apathetic. There are many many Adelaide artists who are worth seeing.. In the past year here are a few names: Masongreystrange, Fiona Beverage, Parlour, Brunatex, Baterz, The LiftDwellers, Heather Frahn, Sarah Masters, TommyGun, Kaleidoscope, J-Ded, Bergerac, Avon... hmm?? And every week there are fabulous bands from interstate who tour through Adelaide... And the international bands usually come through as well... How can you complain about little old Adelaide re. Music??? There's more music than there is punters. Get out and support it, DON'T whinge that nothing is happening, it's kinda counter-productive I rex. then you said: >40' end of rage to see her stuff. Also does anyone agree that JJJ has gradually been on the >decline in the past couple of years? Rubbish, rubbish!!! Put it into perspective, it's the best fucking radio station on earth. We are so lucky to have it. The situation at the ABC is pretty bad, they are running the entire station on the budget of one commercial breakfast show, and the funding is getting worse, and people complain about Triple J for some reason. I think that's really not a good idea, that gives the message to the politicians that we don't want it, then they'll just end up funding it less... My five favourite artists are The Whitlams, John Butler, Machine Gun Fellatio, Dave Graney, and Beth Orton. Triple J introduced me to all of these and I'm so fucking happy they did. No other radio station could have. What about all the other Australian acts they have supported?? Powderfinger, Something for Kate, Pollyanna, George.. umm endless names. What about Wil Anderson and Adam Spencer, they make me laugh every morning. What about the Morning Show? It's excellent in terms of radio jounalism and current affairs. What about Richard Kingsmill on the Oz Music show and the Sunday evening thing. All those interviews with everyone who is wandering around this country playing music and releasing NEW music. What about Live at the wireless? What about Roy&HG!! I fucking love Roy&HG. What about Artery on Sunday night with Fennella Kernebone?? Just because Limp Bizkit and Blink 182 happen to be on the play list of the station doesn't mean the station is going downhill. It's still the most eclectic and diverse and brilliant and IMPORTANT radio station. So don't bag it!! "i'm riding through this valley, all the way, yeah on my own, goin' to learn to say live by myself, gonna learn to be alone" John Butler -"inspiration" Peter Fiebig ~ occy@camtech.net.au ~ ICQ 3596528 "everything that's good about now, might just glide right past" Beth Orton -"central reservation" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 11:29:07 +1000 From: "ariane lewis" Subject: re: australian radio station APOLOGIES to the list for this is NOT Beth related. I want to clear this so people do not get the wrong idea. Perhaps if we want to resume the discussion we should email each other privately - *octagonal* your reply is harsh, overbearing in fact. Don't use emotion to illustrate an argument. I would have to agree that Triple J has declined rapidly since 1994. The music content has been crafted to suit an audience of conservative mainstream teenagers who would have never heard of the Triffids and certainly wouldn't be able to tell you about the Laughing Clowns. Nor would they have gone to the first BDO, or even tell you who played there. Indeed, the Morning Show is a fine peice of current affairs and Richard Kingsmill does well on Thursday and Sunday nights, though the absolute tripe which is Breakfast is unforgiveable. There used to be a grand radio station called Double J in the late 70's through to late 80's: they played good Australian music which no other station would pick up. Now this same radio station, having gone national in mid 90's, markets for an audience that they fabricate and it is that very same audience which you see at BDO gigs, wearing "porn star" tank tops and collars around their neck. They know not of the real Australian music, they know only what JJJ has brainwashed. This is a big shame, for Australian music is now really only to be found on community radio stations around the country. Live At The Wireless USED to be on Monday afternoons at 2pm, playing bands like Buffalo Tom and the Saints. What is it now? An advertisement for bands like Motorace who are set up, like Alex Lloyd, and manufactured for an audience. On a feminist note, I must ask where the female presenters are? We have two men 6-9am, one man 9-12midday, a woman 12-3pm, and a man 3-6pm on weekdays. What's all that about? On this, I must say I have no idea where independent journalism would be, coveirng youth stories imparticular, if it were not for JJJ. They excell in this field and I fully congratulate them for that. It is the music which brings them down. Best, Raine. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Mar 2001 20:55:01 -0500 From: "Chris Beckwith" Subject: Re: australian radio station Let's take this discussion to private mail. I agree with Ariane (fellow Wollongongian :) JJJ is definately going downhill. Adam Spencer isn't funny. He doesn't like INXS. That's it for me: what an arse. Seriously, I don't like Spencer or Will, and now Merrick and Rosso have hone, its easy to say its going downhill. I've also noticed that thing about the women. They always play a backseat role - as newsreader, or producer, and never get air time. You know a station is going downhill when they cater to people wearing Guevara shirts, and hammer and sickle logo's at the BDO - buying coke and carrying Sony, as they tell 'Abo' jokes (racist Australian Aboriginal jokes). A shame - their isn't another station like it. The quicker it goes back to its roots of 'art college' and arts based subjects, the quicker it'll get better. I do like the morning show, and Kingsmill is still good. - ------------------------------ Niko ''Vego's of the world unite'' - ------------------------------ ps, and Octagonal - don't hassle people cos they disagree with you.
