Bits of it won't make sense, as I sent it to a friend (Neil, you can press "delete" at this point) first and then thought I'd inflict on you lot too, but that's just tough. I've taken out the stuff that really wouldn't make sense, anyway. - ----------- As you probably know, it was part of Rough Trade's 25th birthday celebrations, so there were a load of artists playing, and the one before Beth (Eileen Rose?) was very good too. I think the setlist went like this: Daybreak Thinking about tomorrow Someone's daughter Mount Washington Central reservation Blood red river Beauty in you Touch me with your love Feel to believe But I have a feeling I've missed some out. It was just her + acoustic guitar, Ted Barnes + acoustic guitar, and Sean Read + piano. I don't know if you know the union chapel, but it's a sensational venue: cavernous roof, beautiful stained glass behind the stage, you sit in pews - really amazing. The new songs were universally stunning - I cannot *wait* for the new album - - and this despite the odd missed chord ("I'm a really good guitar player it's just my hands are cold!"). Technically it wasn't a brilliant show - she missed a few chords and so on, including the routine "bollocks!" during the difficult chord change on "feel to believe"! - but she's so engaging live that it didn't seem to matter. The sound was very different completely acoustically, too - I'd love to get a copy of the show, but doubt anyone will have recorded it. Damn. She dealt with the heckler (some *oaf* who shouted out "Stunning!" in the quiet moment at the end of, I think, "Central reservation". These people - grrrrr.) very well, too: by basically ignoring his requests ("It's for charity, so I can play what the fuck I like, alright?" in 'common' voice followed by, "I don't know where that came from - I'm sorry" in 'posh' voice) and then just going, "you what, mate?", rolling her eyes at the rest of the audience and muttering. This isn't much of a gig report, for which I apologise - but I wasn't really thinking of doing one! But at the end, as with every gig you go to, I'd had lapses in concentration, where other thoughts creep into your head. And, unusually, I really, *really* regretted them. That's how good she was.
