So i thought i would too. I'm quite a fan of Joni Mitchell, she also has that rich smokey voice. There are some songs i think stand out that i could imagine Beth singing, say California, Chelsea Morning and Come In From the Cold. Anyone agree/disagree?? Anyone >agree/disagree?? I'm a very big Joni fan. As I mentioned a couple of days ago, I have a radio version of Beth doing an acoustic version of Joni's anti-christmas song 'River' (guitar rather than the original piano). If anyone is interested in this I can make CD or tape copies if you send me 'blanks-and-postage'. Contact me off-list if you're interested. One of my favourite things about Beth's voice is that she sings in her own accent, whereas most British singers try an American or mid-atlantic sound. In this way, I think she's very similar to Sandy Denny. Obviously Sandy was more folky, but her solo albums (after Fairport Convention) are said to have been an influence on Beth. It certainly sounds that way, at least vocally. Hmm sorry, but I kinda like this at the moment. Nice to get lots of emails. 10 a day isnt that much is it? With the Belle and Sebatian mailing list - "Sinister", u get about triple the amount, and they make much less sense. Funny though. I don't really like chat rooms, they just carry this stigma and it all feels to organised. Just what I think though. After a long absence seh emerged a couple years back 7 toured with Dylan & Van Morrison; she also appeared at a benefit for Walden Pond, with Bjork and a host of true divas. At the Bob/Van show, some of the crowd grew restless, but we were very close and it was wonderful. All three acts were superb. At first, it didn't make sense: he's a fifth-level black belt ninjitsu guy who used to do security for the Dead Kennedys; besides, it was a really mellow, helpful pit. Apparently, he went down--no problem. But while he was down, a rather large person came down on his head--problem. Security just dumped him outside as if he were a drunk, and I didn't find him until after the show. It could have been tragic. We were told his life would always be viewed in terms of before/after that show. However, his recuperative powers astonished the doctors. he's 100% except for a dodgy sense of smell that may never fully return. But that's a small price to pay, considering. So becareful out there! (What a couple of old farts like us were doing in a mosh pit is another question...) I was booted from the Aimee Mann list last year because I had the audacity to mention other artists while she was on tour; I'd hate to see something like that happen here. Granted, I'd also hate to see this become like the Saint Etienne list where the signal to noise ratio is borderline unbearable, but I don't think we're anywhere near that stage. That said, it's worth having a mini-discussion every now and then about what direction the list is headed in. Which reminds me: Are there any well-populated, Beth-oriented chat rooms out there? Thanks for writing! Chris List Owner P.S. Sorry Hello Everyone, Sorry, this is non-Beth material, but follows the current thread of small artists, folk, etc. and recommendations. Recommendations... 1) Lucy Kaplansky-great songwriter & live, but I haven't seen her make it out West yet. :( 2) Dave Dobbyn -great songwriter & live...you've got to check him out. Another Kiwi great! 3) Eleanor McEvoy (Ireland)-great songwriter & live...earlier material is folkish. Her new material is a little more mainstream, still excellent.
