I know that I would. Although, I have to admit that I "discovered" particular artists after I heard their song on the radio. But I suppose what Kathleen is talking about is listening to an artist just because they're on the radio, in which case, they ARE total cheesebags. This is why I now listen to all the recommendations I hear about artists so I can still catch them while they're on a smaller level. I think it's so hard to talk about this subject without sounding like a selfish, snotty fan because I want to say "Yeah, more people are listening to [insert artist's name]! They'll get the exposure they deserve." But honestly, it's more like "Damn, this means bigger, non-intimate venues, possibly a change in musical style because of all the exposure, and mainstream usually just blows anyway." In my opinion, an artist is always more fun when they're not mainstream (would you rather see an artist performing in a 40 person capacity coffee house or a 1,000 person capacity venue? I prefer the former over the latter). There's a sense of pride knowing that there's this great musical talelent out there and you have the pleasure of listening to them and being one of the early fans. Am I being completely idiotic about this? Maybe, but who cares. - -Jen- "I can resist everything except temptation." I don't think it is snobby to wish for an artist not to go mainstream. It makes their music far less personal when the local "neds", "townies" proclaim their love for the song, only to forget about it two weeks later. When you're the only person who's into the band/singer, it then becomes your music. Well it does for me anyway. Reminds me of a Placebo concert I was at last year in the Barrowlands, Glasgow. As a music venue it rocks, not too big, not too flash, great view of the performers. But I got stuck behind this bunch of people, 3 girls and a guy I think, who talked all the way through, spilt their beer everywhere, and to my absolute horror and disgust, made the "Ooah Oaah" sound usually found in S Club 7 videos and such. Also Radiohead in Glasgow, I was stupid enough to come in about 30 mins before it started, got parked next to some guy who just kept saying "Play Fake Plastic Trees man". Ugh. When Muse came to Glasgow last year for the first time I think, they played in King Tut's. A very small and cool venue, no more than 100 capacity I don't think, and I didn't go! Raargh! I will never forgive myself for that. Oh well, at least they're not doing Arena tours or anything. Any similar concert experiences? Blatant Exclusion also abounds... the site fails to mention (at least as far as I can tell) Beth's work on the second Chemical Brothers album, "Dig You're Own Hole". Beth sings "Where do I begin". I remember buying the album the week it came out, never having heard her voice before, and falling instantly in love with that song.
