The songs weren't very strong and the production and arrangements weren't to my taste. I'm hesitant to recommend Red Rice, IMO her best work, because it is a traditional English fiddle-led folk record and you've really got to be 'into' that to get the most out of it. For those not in the know, Liza is the daughter of the legendary guitarist Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson. The family band albums under the name Waterson:Carthy are really great, but, again, if you haven't an ear for 'the tradition' be wary - try before you buy. I'm conscious not everyone likes songs about pigs, giants, herring, gypsies or a capella English Baptist hymns. Angels & Cigarettes was the most mainstream thing she has put out. I would, however, recommend the wonderful Kate Rusby to trailer-park as an easier introduction to the trad. folk genre. Her 'Hourglass' would be one of my desert island discs. I read an article the other day stating that Badly Drawn Boy is this generations's John Lennon, and while I think that that's a little too extreme, he is definitely one of the most talented singer-songwriters today. He has a strong sense of melody and writes some solid songs. Definitely someone to check out. By the way, Nursery Rhyme on UNKLE's album is a great song, but nothing on Bewilderbeast sounds like it, so don't expect that. As for the Beck comparison, I think that's a little erroneous. BDB is more along the lines of a happy Elliott Smith, or a MUCH happier Joseph Arthur. Hope that helps. Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo!
