Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I can't see any sign of it on the website. In the Evening Standard last night, they listed a Beth Orton gig. Friday 2nd March Chapel, Islington #12.50 Apparently it's for Rough Trade's 25th Anniversary, and four acts are playing, but it was listed under Beth Orton, so hopefully she'll be the main act. The other acts include Eileen Rose, and Monica Queen (ex-Thrum singer, and vocalist on Belle and Sebastian's Lazy Line Painter Jane). Does anyone know the fourth act? Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and Stargreen. A mixed review of the London one-off clipped from music365.com: http://www.music365.com/autocontent/live_57854.htm Venue: King's College Ticket Price: #10 Urbanite songbird enlists Johnny Marr for her new jazz direction Quite why the capital's A and B-list celebrities have such a fondness for Beth Orton remains a deep mystery. At this semi-exclusive gig, the likes of Noel Gallagher, Ed Chemical and Jarvis Cocker rub shoulders and urinal bowls with wage labour slaves. To top it all off, she even ropes in legendary guitarist Johnny Marr to join her for a couple of new songs. When Orton emerged five years ago with `Trailer Park', her combination of winsome hippy-folk and Andrew Weatherall's gloopy electronics could occasionally stir a caressing beatitude - not for nothing was she dubbed the comedown queen. Yet cut free from the stately magic of Weatherall's production, Orton's songwriting prowess seems alarmingly prosaic. Her bird-like voice can rustle up some yearning grace, but such politeness, such devotion to coffee table taste soon becomes irritating without doses of sharp melodic substance. Admittedly, tonight's largely new set suffers from first-hearing syndrome, but even familiar cuts such as `Stolen Car' still leave your eyes wondering and your mind fixating on the late night film. Marr's mid-set appearance then, comes as a sighing relief. Certainly, his ever brilliant mercurial guitar lines add some much needed character signatures to new songs `Holding On' and `Beauty In You'. Unfortunately even this spell quickly dissipates. With Orton's new jazzier direction hinted at (she even says "Niiiiice" to really ram the point home), Marr accompanies her for a spot of improv jazz pockery. It's only with the ghostly splendor of encore `She Cries Her Name' that Beth's celeb appeal makes itself felt. Nonetheless, it seems Noel and Jarv et al should really get out more. 6/10 Neil Davenport Eyewitness Report: Towards the end of `Central Reservation', a fire alarm goes off and everyone is ushered out of the building. It was the most exciting thing all evening. - ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ---------------------~-~> eGroups is now Yahoo!
