I thinks she introduced this as 'Thinking of Tomorrow'. I agree that the new songs were very good. I'm really looking forward to the album, more than ever. Can't say I thought much of Johnny Marr. It was very impressive to have him on stage, but I didn't think he really added much. He seemed to be wielding his guitar like he was playing for AC-DC or something at points - bizarre! But then maybe I'm just siding with Morrissey... For others who were there: (Does anyone know what happened to the support act? I was looking forward to seeing Ed Harcourt, as I've read some good reviews. To be honest I was pissed off at the lack of information. wayahead.com, where I got my tickets, said doors at 7, show at 7.30. So foolishly I got there just after 7 and had to wait in the cold till 7.40. Then we all stood around looking like fools till Beth showed up at 9.30. The music they chose would have been fine for a club, but when you're standing around waiting for a support act which never comes it was just irritating. I can understand that things happen. Maybe Ed Harcourt couldn't make it, maybe they were waiting for Johnny Marr to show up or something, maybe Beth was still down the pub (isn't this her usual pre-gig routine?), but whatever, we could have been told that nothing was going to happen for two hours. Of course, I forgave her the moment she came on stage, especially as she started with 'Blood Red River'. But I'd dragged some friends along as an education, and they remained pissed off about it. I know Beth doesn't have much control over these things, but someone in her management could have just made an announcement or something.) Anyway, so it was a very, very good gig, badly organised. Very unusal ending as well. Quite funny really, Beth's face was a picture. In the space of about 3 seconds we went from the start of a gentle song to lights on and the announcement 'Due to unforseen circumstances we will have to ask you to evacuate the building etc'. Will we ever find out what the encore might have been? I'm just glad I'd managed to get my coat from the cloakroom between the main set and the encore, or it would have been a very cold journey home. So, does anyone have any news on when we'll get to hear the studio versions of these songs. Have to agree with you about the general organisation. Bought the tickets weeks ago and had to chase them up a few times before being told to collect them at the venue. Stood in the cold unnesessarily, and got two hours drinking in before Beth came on at 9.30. I brought 3 friends along who had to rush from work. At least it was beer at student prices... I thought Jonny Marr's playing was pretty good, though he looked and played like he should be in Oasis! These songs were well played and arranged, I'd imagine they were pretty much the finished studio versions. Roll on April/ May. Any news on album title? > > I agree that the new songs were very good. (with Liam Gallagher >hair) Aw, that's fantastic news! Marr doesn't work nearly enough these days, and considering how many "changed my life forever" songs he co-wrote, I'm really looking forward to hearing these. Shame about the hair, though... but then again, he's always been overshadowed in the style department by his collaborators (Morrissey, Ferry, Hynde... well, probably not Matt Johnson...) The former Smiths guitarist sang and played on four songs, including brand new Orton tracks 'Holding On', 'Concrete Sky', 'Beauty In You' and also on 'Someone's Daughter'. Orton was previewing new songs in front of a tightly packed audience of several hundred, including Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker, at the low-key show at King's College. Marr sang backing vocals on 'Holding On' and 'Beauty In You', playing lead guitar on 'Concrete Sky', which led into a free-flowing jazz jam with Orton, one of the highlights of the evening, with its refrain "I feel like I'm falling". Prior to announcing her surprise guest - who was introduced with the words: "I bumped into someone in the toilets. His name is Johnny Marr. He's going to play some songs" - she had performed seven songs with her backing band, including two new numbers 'Daybreaker' and 'Paris Train'. The new songs displayed a jazzier feel, which Orton acknowledged, pulling a stool onstage and saying: "This is my jazz stool. This is where I sit when I play jazz," and adding in a 'Fast Show' spoof: "Niiiice." After Marr left the stage, she continued with 'She Cries Your Name' and 'Best Bit', before breaking for an encore. However, the set was cut slightly short by a fire alarm, causing power to cut out in the building. The first song of the encore, 'Mount Washington' went off without incident, but before she had completed 'Central Reservation', an official from the venue approached the sound desk, and warned that a fire alarm had gone off elsewhere in the building and the power would shut off in a minute. As the venue was plunged into semi-darkness and the PA power cut out, Orton looked bemused, before leaving the stage, and the audience were quickly ushered out. The full set-list was: 'Blood Red River' 'Stolen Car' 'Thinking About Tomorrow' 'Daybreaker' ' Path In Time' 'Sugar Boy' 'Paris Train' (With Johnny Marr) 'Holding On' 'Beauty In You' 'Concrete Sky' 'Someone's Daughter' (Without Marr) 'She Cries Your Name' 'Best Bit' ENCORE 'Mount Washington' 'Central Reservation' S.P.P.P. p.s. Speculation indeed. Pah! They need to get their facts straight before claiming 'Exclusives'.
