I'll apologise for inaccuracies, due to lots of beer and inability to remember every song, anyone else please feel free to correct and/or add to it, I just wanted to give people a feel of this evening. It was exciting due to the airing of some new songs, and a special guest! Beth came on at 9.30pm to a sold out hall, small but atmospheric. She started off a bit nervously with Blood Red River, and a cracking Stolen Car, then first new songs. She didnt announce many titles, so I don't know what the first was called, but it was fabulous, catchy and uptempo. Next new track was dark, moody, slower and full of hurt (possibly called Sometimes). There was a faster version of Sugar Boy and then Beth introduced "someone I've been writing and working with - Jonny Marr!" (with Liam Gallagher hair) for 3 new songs. The first two (possibly Holding On and Beauty in You) were catchy and had trademark Marr jangly guitar, giving Beth a poppier sound. She introduced the next song as Concrete Sky, again with Marr, who was well received by the audience. Next up was a Marr version of Someone's Daughter, fantastic, and a moving Pass in Time. Beth pulled out the big croud pleaser She Cries Your Name, this was simply perfect, no other way to describe it, and a rocking Best Bit to finish the main set was just as good. Beth came on solo for the encore, Stars All Seem To Weep, with a few stumbles, and was joined by the band when (horror!) the power was cut and the hall evacuated due to fire alarms going off. Aaarghh!! But Beth took it so well - she looked stunned as the power went off mid-vocal, the recovered, gave everyone a big, big wave, and headed offstage, to huge appause. At least it didnt happen earlier, but was still a pisser! So, this was my first Beth show and I loved it, after being a fan for a couple of years. Beth was witty, nervous and had everyone eating out of her hand. She grew in confidence as her voice warmed up. I was excited by the new songs, working with Jonny Marr has added a poppy guitar sound and several of them were excellent, can't wait for the new album having had a bit of a sneak preview. Shame about the fire alarm, but you can't have everything. Big thumbs down to the 3 guys smoking a joint beside us, and who didnt share! I'll put as much of the setlist as I can remember, I've missed one or two that I can't remember. Please add to it if you were there. Blood Red River Stolen Car new song Sometimes? (new) Sugar Boy Holding On ? Beauty in You ? Concrete Sky (all 3 new, with guest Jonny Marr) Someone's Daughter (with Marr) Pass In Time She Cries Your Name Best Bit Encore: Stars All Seem To Weep Don't Know - was cut short due fire alarm! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2001 08:22:37 +0000 (GMT) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Peter=20Westlake?= Subject: Re: Short Beth review Excellent! I didn't think that Jonny Marr was going to play until after the album had been released, because I knew that she didn't want to play any of the songs until they'd finished recording the album, but I guess it might be ahead of schedule. She never fails to please! S.P.P.P. - --- Neil Bowles wrote: > Hi, > Here's a quick (and incomplete) review of Beth's > show this evening at > Macadam Hall, King's College, London.
