Does anyone have an mp3 of 'don't wanna know 'bout evil'? Or know where I could get one? I would REALLY appreciate it!! Thanks, Adam. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2000 21:27:48 -0000 From: "untruth" Subject: More on The Junction Hi again Just another thing, the Junction gig was the first I have seen out of nine over three and a half years, where the cello player was not Sarah Willson. Does anyone know anything? Mind you over that time, the band has changed quite a bit, with only Ted Barnes and Sean Read being constant. All the others have changed at least once, and a percussionist has been added and discarded. I'm only thankful that unlike a number of other acts, there's not someone at the back playing records. It was a sold out gig, as far as I know, and certainly the hall was much fuller than when she last played there. The audience was clearly 'up for it' from the off, and gave the support band a good reception. The support was either Bap Kennedy (as he several times announced) with a few backing musicians (including Sean Read from Beth's band), or, as the lady at the Junction's Booking Office said, The Bap Kennedies. Anyway, Bap himself was a personable enough character, and had a nice line in between-song patter . Their music was good, IMO, although the first few songs sounded just like a seventies duo called Gallagher and Lyle - (anyone remember 'Heart on My Sleeve'?). (BTW, the first time I saw Beth, Travis were the support, and they are really nothing more than Del Amitri with 90's haircuts. Does this mean that Beth has a thing for support acts that sound like old Scottish bands? I'm going to stick my neck out and guess that the support on the next tour will be a Simple Minds Tribute Band.) At about 9.15, Beth and the boys came out and performed the following set :- (Sorry - Set List to Follow - I can't find my notes) I'm not sure what the problem was, but I have to say that for the first few songs, Beth's singing was absolutely awful. She seemed to be putting on a 'voice' that was false to my ears, and which at times, was tuneless. At one point about three songs in, I seriously wondered whether, if it continued, I could stand to listen much more. The improvement started shortly after that, thankfully. Also, throughout, her diction was not as good as usual, and I wondered why she was continuously and deliberately emphasising her epiglottal 'T' sound - indeed, the 'T' in 'Galaxy of EmpTiness' was one of the few she sounded all evening. I've no doubt it was a deliberate choice of pronunciation, but I've no idea why. Having said that, her voice improved markedly through the evening, and her singing during the encores was as good as I've ever heard, both tuneful, and emotional, as we know Beth can be. This was my ninth Beth gig, and the audience reaction was the most active and vocal I have experienced, yet it was respectful, with very little talking going on during the music. I thought it was a bit odd to see a few punters (who no doubt would claim to be her biggest fans, ) dancing and pogoing during 'Best Bit', a song about the death of her mother. (I used to be equally bemused to see people dancing to Natalie Merchant/10,000 Maniacs songs about child abuse and alcoholism, but perhaps that's just me). I wish you could have been there, you'd have enjoyed it Cheers Neil ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 14:45:05 PDT From: "Dave H" Subject: Re: trailer-park-digest V1 #104 I'm looking for a CD of Super Pinky Mandy.
