Anthony Padilla" Subject: RE: It's so slow! I first heard of Beth Orton when KCRW, a local public radio station here in Los Angeles, played "Where do I begin?" That's the song that Beth provided vocals for on Dig Your Own Hole, the Chemical Brother's album. They made a point of mentioning her name, and it stuck fast in my head. One time, when listening to KCRW, I even (unless I was on drugs, cuz I've never gotten independent confirmation that this version exists) heard an acoustic version of Where Do I Begin, and thought it was utterly beautiful. So a couple weeks later, I was at Tower and they had her album on sale, so I said, what the heck, maybe that acoustic version's on her album. It wasn't, and I was pretty disappointed. I listened to the whole album through one time, and I just thought, "what is this folkie/country crap?" It sounded too bland, and just... mediocre. So I put it away in my cd rack, and promptly forgot I even owned it for about a month. Then I was looking through my cd's one day, and stumbled across it. When I saw it, my brain just flashed on little bits of songs that I was suddenly aching to hear! It was kinda weird, cuz I had such a bland reaction to it the first time. So I put it on, and that little violin (or viola) line that opens She Cries Your Name just shot straight to my heart. After that, I listened to it all the way through... listened to it constantly, got 2 of my friends indoctrinated on the glories of Beth Orton, and that was about it.
