There's nothing like a poll to encourage me to de-lurk. I first heard Beth, rather curiously, on Radio 4's 'Kaleidoscope's arts programme in the car while waiting for my brother in a supermarket car park. She played 'She cries your name' acoustic - this was before it came out for the first time. I must confess I wasn't knocked out by the song (it's still not one of my favourites) but there was something about her delivery and phrasing that made me remember her name. She also name-dropped several artists I liked in the subsequent interview - Drake, Martyn etc. which made me think 'Hmm I like where this gal is coming from'. The 'Somebody's Daughter' single made me a fan - particularly the 'Wish I never saw the sunshine' b' side. I later heard her play 'It's not the Spotlight' on the Radcliffe programme and thought, 'She is *sooo* good at covers'. Only Mary Lou Lord is better at interpreting other people's material IMHO. Buying 'Trailer Park' convinced me she was a fine songwriter in her own right. The rest is history. Question 3 - Well Sweetest Decline bathes me in a nice warm emotion and reminds me of last summer. A good friend bought Trailer Park for me in '96, so I heard it all at once. It didn't grab me the first time I listened to it, but as I played it more I discovered all the amazing layers, musically and lyrically. 2. The whole album made me a fan, but my faves are Sugar Boy, Touch Me With Your Love, Whenever, Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine. What sealed it for me was seeing her perform at Lilith that summer. She and Ted Barnes were on basically an orange crate for a stage. She was so fumbling and sweet and gracious and strong, even though there were only about 30 of us paying attention. 3. Feel to Believe. I tear up every time I hear the line, "The soul and the spirit each have got their own limit." She loads it with emotion. It's amazing. I listen to it when I need to put my life into perspective. Here's another question: What's your favorite way/place/time to listen to Beth? (Besides live, which is the ultimate, of course.) I popped in Trailer Park after I'd moved into a cavernous apartment with hardwood floors. I didn't have a lot of furniture yet, so the sound echoed and resonated an surrounded me. Try it if you can. amy - ---------- >From: dorian01@amazed.co.uk >To: trailer-park@smoe.org >Subject: It's so slow! >Date: Tue, May 23, 2000, 9:44 PM > > It's been so slow lately I thought maybe a Beth poll might be fun. > > 1.
