Here's a transcript of the appearance (which would have been pre-recorded during her Australian tour in January) with the videos she chose. They also played four of Beth's videos (unfortunately no "Best Bit") and she made a couple of comments about these as well. **** BO: Hello, this is Beth Orton and I'm gonna be picking my favourite videos for Rage. So tune in, don't touch that dial and don't drop out. [Rage intro] BO: So the first video I've picked is Fatboy Slim, "Praise You". I love this video, it makes me smile, it's got that amateur feel. And it's very funny. So here it is, "Praise You". Praise You - Fatboy Slim Run On - Moby Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? - Moby BO: So the next video I picked is Massive Attack, "Unfinished Sympathy". It's a very simple idea -- just followin' a girl walking. One shot which is something they used in films like "Mean Streets" and "Goodfellows" and stuff like that. And it's just very simple, very clever idea and a brilliant song. So here it is, "Unfinished Sympathy". Unfinished Sympathy - Massive Attack Ghost Town - The Specials BO: So, this is Stone Roses from Manchester, England doing "She Bangs The Drum". Mainly I picked this 'cause I really like the song, to be quite honest with you, and I can't really remember what the video's like but I'm sure it's good and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Here it goes, "She Bangs The Drum". She Bangs The Drums - Stone Roses My Iron Lung - Radiohead BO: Next up is Radiohead, "Street Spirit". I love this, not only 'cause it's got trailers in it, but I just think it's amazing. It's so clever the way they all spin around and do all that sort of stuff. Anyway, here it is "Street Spirit". Street Spirit - Radiohead All Is Full Of Love - Bjork As Tears Go By - Marianne Faithful BO: Hello, this is Beth Orton and you're watching Raaage. Under My Thumb - The Rolling Stones Faded - Ben Harper BO: This next video is The Chemical Brother's "Let Forever Be". A superbly done video... umm, what can you say. It's again, one idea really and very well executed and I hope you enjoy it -- "Let Forever Be". Let Forever Be - The Chemical Brothers Kelly Watch The Stars - Air Devil's Haircut - Beck Whip It - Devo Living With A Hernia - Weird Al Yankovic BO: Right, crazy, wicked in'nit, you know what I'm sayin' right. This is "Pumping On Your Stereo" or humpin' on yer... I don't know one of those. And it's Supergrass. Marvellous, marvellous boys. Marvellous song. Got big bandy legs -- the geezer from The Muppets did it. Makes me laugh this video, "Pumping On Your Stereo"... what are they called ... [looking off camera and getting the reply, "Supergrass"] ...Supergrass. Pumping On Your Stereo - Supergrass Radio Clash - The Clash BO: OK, this is "London Calling" by The Clash and I had to pick this one because Joe Strummer's doing The Big Day Out, 'cause The Clash are brilliant, and just to give you a little splice of what it's like to live in London. Hope you enjoy it, "London Calling", The Clash. London Calling - The Clash Tony Adams - Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros BO: Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues". One of the most beautiful films is "Don't Look Back" and ahh... with Bob Dylan and... where he's giving it all that [makes 'turning cards' hand motions] with the cards. Simple idea, beautifully done. Good old Bob Dylan, here he goes, "Subterranean Homesick Blues". Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan Waiting On A Friend - The Rolling Stones Sexual Healing - Marvin Gaye BO: Right, this is the comedy part of the programme where you get to see Kate Bush doing "Wuthering Heights" and all those amazingly clever tchu, tchu, tchu, tchu, tchu, tchu... [?] follow-throughs -- whatever you call 'em. I don't know what you call 'em but it's hilarious, I love it, I love all the arms [waves arms about]. So here it is, Kate Bush, "Wuthering Heights". Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush BO: Right, you're going to love this one. This is Bjork, "Venus Is A Boy". It's just here frying an egg. One idea, yet again, shining through. Beautiful song and beautiful 'bird'. Here it is, "Venus Is A Boy". Venus As A Boy - Bjork On And On - Erykah Badu Still - Macy Gray BO: Hi, this is Beth Orton and you're watching Rage. Shoop Shoop Song - Aretha Franklin Can I Get A Witness - Marvin Gaye Gravity - James Brown My Prerogative - Bobby Brown Pop That Coochie - The 2 Live Crew Brown Sugar - D'Angelo BO: OK, the next video I've picked is Madonna, "Justify My Love". Black & white, sexy as... you know what and a beautiful song. "Justify My Love", Madonna. Justify My Love - Madonna Inertia Creeps - Massive Attack Around The World - Daft Punk Pocket Calculator - Kraftwerk BO: So this is Unkle with Tom Yorke from Radiohead singing "Rabbit In Your Headlights" and I just think this is one of the best videos that's been made in years... along with all the others I've picked out, ha. It's just very scary really, isn't it? It's just sort of... it's pretty dynamic, or something. And anyway, here it is "Rabbit In Your Headlights". Rabbit In Your Headlights - Unkle So Real - Jeff Buckley Shot In The Arm - Wilco BO: Hello, this is Beth Orton andc you're watching Rage. Touch Me With Your Love - Beth Orton BO: Right this is the bit you're gonna love. This is my song. This is "She Cries Your Name" shot by my friend Ellen Nolan. She directed it and I'm very proud of it for her as much as me. Yeah, "She Cries Your Name", Beth Orton. She Cries Your Name - Beth Orton BO [with the boom mic in shot and being moved around, à la the video]: Right, this is another one of my videos. It's called "Stolen Car" and Hal Hartley shot it. We did it in New York and it's got this sort of idea of speaking into a microphone, almost like a verbal photo shoot. Make of it what you will. "Stolen Car", Beth Orton. Stolen Car - Beth Orton Central Reservation (Ben Watt mix) - Beth Orton **** Best wishes, Darren Graffiti Limbo Michelle Shocked Site: http://members.xoom.com/g_limbo/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 02 Apr 2000 11:09:41 +0900 From: *octagonal* Subject: fuct! That transcipt of Rage lastnight brought home the sadness! In South Australia the ABC played the Basketball and we didn't get the Rage coverage until the Marvin Gaye clip and the insert where she spoke about Kate Bushes 'withering heights'. Look at the transcript! Look at how much we missed because of fucking Basketball. That's not even a real sport. meeow. Oh come on! You can't even touch the opponent! Why don't they just put on a dress and do a big twirl for us! That is so unfair. I'm going to ring the ABC on Monday morning and blast fuck out of them. That's a lot of Beth we missed out on. It would have ruined my evening had I not been out all night and had to tape it. Instead it ruined my Sunday when i played the tape! How many other states did the Basketball infringe on a night of Beth programming? Was it just unfortunate South Australians? I'd love to know. Importantly, we did get the four Beth videos. *sigh* Watching those at least made missing all the rest of the programming not matter so much. But it does matter!
